A series of studies in children with pervasive developmental disorder and gastrointestinal symptoms has reported the presence of a subtle mucosal inflammation, immunohistochemical abnormalities of structure and cellular infiltrate, pro-inflammatory lymphocyte cytokine profiles, and functional intestinal abnormalities.
