Abstract

Introduction

Patients with hepatic encephalopathy have an altered sleep pattern. Tryptophan metabolism produces two sedative compounds oxindole and melatonin. Altered tryptophan metabolism in patients with hepatic encephalopathy could have some role in the pathogenesis of the disease.
