Abstract
Dramatic declines in the incidence of AIDS and the number of deaths from this disease began in the United States in 1996, in association with the widespread use of potent combinations of antiretroviral drugs. Subsequently, the rates of decline have slowed and begun to level. As of June 2000, more than 300,000 people were estimated to be living with AIDS.
