As a short introduction on the general development and forecast of world market in photovoltaics (PV) are presented. The general classification introduces grid connected, stand alone, large scale and roof-top PV-systems. The core of presentation concentrates on the development and trends of converters for grid connected PV-systems. The novel multi-string converter is introduced representing one of the major trends in PV system technology towards modular PV-system design based on string converter technology with low specific costs and optimal energy yield. A brief excursion into the area of hybrid power systems deals with the development of hybrid power system technology using some representative examples installed by SMA around the world. As one of the future trends in that area a new bi-directional battery-converter for a modularly-structured hybrid power system technology is introduced.

This paper presents a family of 1-φ transformerless switched-capacitor based five-level inverter (TSC5LI) topologies for PV applications. The proposed family comprises 4 inverter topologies: H8, H8-UPF, H10 and H10-UPF capable of mitigating the leakage current by having continuous grid frequency voltage at PV parasitic capacitor in spite of considering switch terminal capacitances. A distinctive attribute of the TSC5LI is that 100% dc bus utilization, symmetrical operation and constant total-com...

Generally, two devices are responsible for generation of time variant power. They are alternator and inverter. Harmonics are the unwanted signals generally created on the output of the inverter. In this paper hysteresis current control inverters are described. Here the HCC Inverters are connected with grid and without grid and integrated with a photo voltaic panel. The HCC inverters are connected to grid by the help of phase lock loop. Finally total harmonics distortion is calculated of this mod...
In recent years, Microinverters have gained much attention since the direct connection of PV modules to the grid can increase the amount of harvested energy when compared to traditional string inverters. In addition, the use of microinverters results in a modular system which can grow over time, with increased reliability. Key aspects for the implementation of a microinverter are that the selected power converter topology is required to have high voltage gain to interface the low voltage PV inpu...

By their nature PV power generation can be considered static. This means they do not have inertia as rotating machines do, and thus, they cannot handle transient load demands that go over their instantaneous maximum power point. In addition, when compared to traditional generators their power ramp rate is much steeper, being able to reach values of 90% per minute and higher. Both characteristics have an impact on power system operation, especially in the case of large PV plants. For example, due...

The price of PV panels and batteries are declining rapidly. New technologies are emerging in power systems for energy management. These recent prospects have triggered the question, whether installing PV panels coupled with batteries for a residential load is economical?. In this manuscript, a decision support algorithm is developed for determining the feasibility of installing the PV-battery hybrid system for grid-connected residential loads. An objective function based technique is also introd...

This paper proposes a 5-level single-phase transformerless inverter topology for grid-connected PV applications. The new topology makes use of a switched-capacitor network on the input side and eliminates leakage current completely by maintaining the Total Common Mode Voltage (TCMV) constant. The proposed inverter topology has the advantage of complete multi-level performance resulting in low harmonic distortion in the output voltage and reduction in device stress. Moreover, the proposed inverte...

ABSTRACTLarge-scale grid-connected photovoltaic (PV) systems are facing issues like increment of efficiency, minimization of cost, and robustness of the total system. PV strings should operate at maximum power point in all weather conditions to make an efficient system. Inverter is one of the main components along with PV string in grid-connected PV system. Two-level inverters are normally used for practical implementation; however, multilevel inverters, especially cascaded H-bridge (CHB) invert...

Power generation in a PV system is defined by its V-I, and V-P characteristics. These curves are function of instantaneous solar irradiation and cell temperature; and outline the maximum power that the system can supply at any given moment. As a consequence of this PV systems lack overload capacity, which is common in traditional rotating generators; and therefore, PV systems cannot supply short term or transient load demands. To solve this issue two approaches can be taken; one is to constantly...

Abstract Many single phase transformerless inverter topologies with reduced leakage current have been introduced for grid tied photovoltaic (PV) applications in the past few years. These topologies are mainly classified on the basis of leakage current reduction methods: galvanic isolation with common mode voltage (CMV) clamping and without CMV clamping. The galvanic isolation can be achieved by incorporation of extra switches either on ac side or dc side of full bridge (H4) inverter topology for...
