Abstract This study evaluates the fate of certain bactericidal agents introduced into microbial fuel cell (MFC) cascades and the response of the microbial community. We tested the response of functioning urine fed MFC cascades using two very different bactericidal agents: a common antibiotic (Ampicillin, 5 g/L) and a disinfectant (Chloroxylenol 4.8 g/L) in concentrations of up to 100 times higher than the usual dose. Results of power generation showed that the established bacteria community was ...

Abstract This review summarizes the basic features of the PQQ-GDH enzyme as one of the sugar converting biocatalysts. Focus is on the membrane -bound and the soluble form. Furthermore, the main principles of enzymatic catalysis as well as studies on the physiological importance are reviewed. A short overview is given on developments in protein engineering. The major part, however, deals with the different fields of application in bioelectrochemistry. This includes approaches for enzyme-electrode...

Abstract To achieve high efficiency of electroporation and to minimize unwanted side effects, the electric field parameters must be optimized. Recently, it was suggested that biphasic high-frequency irreversible electroporation (H-FIRE) pulses reduce muscle contractions. However, it was also shown for sub-microsecond biphasic pulses that the opposite polarity phase of the pulse cancels the effect of the first phase if the interphase delay is short enough. We investigated the effect of interphase...

Abstract In this paper, a novel strategy in the application of the parallel factor analysis (PARAFAC) to a four-way voltammetric dataset was improved to evidence the interaction of etoposide (ETO) and calf thymus deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) to determine the ETO-DNA binding constant. PARAFAC is one of the most commonly used techniques applicable to the decomposition of higher-order data arrays to focus on features of interest and provides a different resolution of the chemical problem of interest...

Abstract The development of sensitive and convenient detection methods to monitor thrombin without the use of enzymes or complex nanomaterials is highly desirable for the diagnosis of cardiovascular diseases. In this article, tetraferrocene was first synthesized and then a sensitive and homogeneous electrochemical aptasensor was developed for thrombin detection based on host-guest recognition between tetraferrocene and β-cyclodextrin (β-CD). In the absence of thrombin, the double stem-loop of th...

Abstract Apolipoprotein E4 (ApoE4) has a key role on the onset and progression of Alzheimer’s disease (AD), since it favours the deposition of toxic amyloid-beta (Aβ) aggregates in the brain. These effects might result from the interaction between ApoE4 and specific DNA promoters related to cellular autophagy pathways and to the expression of neuroprotective proteins, like sirtuin-1 (SirT1). Herein, we modified gold electrodes with mixed self-assembled monolayer of 6-mercapto-1-hexanol and thiol...

Abstract Common alloys used for the manufacture of aircrafts are subject to different forms of environmental deterioration. A major one is corrosion, and there is a strong body of evidence suggesting that environmental microorganisms initiate and accelerate it. The development of an appropriate strategy to reduce this process depends on the knowledge concerning the factors involved in corrosion. In this work, a biofilm forming bacterial consortium was extracted in situ from the corrosion product...

Abstract The discriminating effects of nanosecond pulsed electric fields (nsPEFs) between chemoresistant tumor cells (CRTCs) and their respective homologous chemosensitive tumor cells (CSTCs) were investigated based on bioimpedance spectroscopy (BIS). The electrical properties of individual untreated cells were determined by fitting the impedance spectra to an equivalent circuit model and then using aided simulations to calculate the nuclear envelope transmembrane potential (nTMP) and electropor...

Abstract Laccase from Botryosphaeria rhodina MAMB-05 was covalently immobilized on carboxymethyl-botryosphaeran by 1-ethyl-3-(3-dimethylaminopropyl) carbodiimide and N-hydroxysuccinimide (EDC/NHS) in aqueous solution. This approach was employed to fabricate a novel laccase-based biosensor to electrochemically quantify quercetin (QCT), using a simple carbon black paste electrode as a transducer. The proposed biosensor was characterized by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and Nyquist plots w...
