Abstract Osteoarthritis (OA) is a degenerative joint disease, which is usually accompanied by inflammation. The aim of this study was to evaluate the anti-inflammatory effect of Low-intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS) on OA. Fibroblast-Like Synoviocyte (FLS) were stimulated by LIPUS with/without interleukin (IL)-1β to evaluate inflammatory responses. The results showed that IL-1β could effectively induce the production of nitric oxide (NO), prostaglandin E2 (PGE2), matrix metalloprotease (MMP)-1...

Abstract A method to analyze the acoustic characteristics of periodic structures is investigated. When a continuous boundary condition is introduced, the field in which a plane wave is normally incident on the periodic structure can be easily analyzed by the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method. However, when a plane wave source is obliquely incident, field mapping with auxiliary variables is necessary to remove the phase shift between unit cells. Here, a technique originally proposed for...

Abstract Vehicle horns must satisfy sound pressure level regulations in each country. Therefore, it is essential to optimize the horn location inside the front grille of the vehicle to maximize sound transmission through the grille opening and adhere to sound pressure level regulations. This study developed a computational method to determine optimal horn locations during early stages of vehicle development to reduce the number of trials during later stages. Therefore, an analytical model based ...

Abstract This paper aims to explore the influence factors of speech intelligibility and the applicability of the speech transmission index (STI) in large spaces, where the sound energy is unevenly distributed and non-exponentially decays. The subjective speech intelligibility tests were conducted in Mandarin (China mainland) in two large spaces with volumes of 97,000 m3 and 246,000 m3. Objective indicators such as the Reverberation Time (RT), Early Decay Time (EDT), Definition (D50), and Speech ...

Abstract Single-channel speech dereverberation and separation has been a challenging problem and is of high significance in speech processing applications. Many researchers have tried to address this problem separately, either investigating speech dereverberation or separation. Most of the available literature on joint dereverberation and separation research is for multichannel. Moreover, in joint dereverberation and separation research, mostly noise is considered as the other source. Therefore,...

Abstract Audiovisual superstimuli at night parties have been concerning parents and public health authorities, mainly when it comes to the risk of drug abuse and violence. However, the effects of such stimuli on the mental health of night-party goers are little known. Thus, the aim of the present study was to evaluate whether Swiss mice exposure to night-party environment simulations induces locomotor damages and predictive behavioral changes such as anxiety and memory deficit. Animals were expo...

Abstract Fibonacci Series and Music are related in many ways. Even though Indian Classical Music (ICM) is known to be based on Just Intonation rather than equal tempered, not much attention has been given to inflections on the notes, which are integral part of the notes themself. In this work an interesting relation between Fibonacci series and Just Intonation in ICM has been found. Further, discrete version of pitch contours based on a table derived using Fibonacci series is introduced for ICM....

Abstract Source localization and quantification by an acoustic array of microphones depend to a great extent on an accurate knowledge of the antenna position towards the radiating device. The present work details a methodology to determine the location of the microphones in relation to an object of study, starting from its geometric shape and that of the array, in order to reproduce an experimental configuration in any retro-propagating method. A set of reference sources are placed on several pr...

Abstract The adoption of the environmental sound classification (ESC) tasks increases very rapidly over recent years due to its broad range of applications in our daily routine life. ESC is also known as Sound Event Recognition (SER) which involves the context of recognizing the audio stream, related to various environmental sounds. Some frequent and common aspects like non-uniform distance between acoustic source and microphone, the difference in the framework, presence of numerous sounds sourc...

Abstract Partial microperforated panel (MPP) structures have been proposed for MPP with low sound absorption properties. Its purpose is to improve the sound absorption performance of the MPP in certain frequency bands. The structure was studied by the transfer matrix method, finite element simulation and experimental test. The results show that the three kinds of curves, that is, theoretical and simulation and experimental curves, are in good agreement. In the parallel structure of partial MPP a...
