Abstract Effective modification of nanosilica particles in aqueous solution with the hydrophobic modifier bis[3-(triethoxysilyl)propyl]-tetrasulfide (Si69) was developed. The modification was carried out through the route of aqueous mixing, spray drying, and thermal treatment. The Si69 hydrolysate was maintained at a low concentration by using micro-injection and well mixed with the nanosilica particles to increase the hydrolysate grafting density on the particle surfaces. Precipitated, fumed, a...

Abstract Pickering particles have been extensively shown to hold an immense potential as emulsion stabilisers. Lipid-based particles in particular, are increasingly studied as edible Pickering structures. The aim of this work was to investigate whether specific formulation parameters that are key for the fabrication of lipid particles with a Pickering functionality can also impact upon the ability of these structures to withstand drying and subsequent rehydration events, without loss to their or...

Abstract Silicate with various pore structures and morphologies showed different adsorption effects on removing organic pollutants, but the corresponding adsorption mechanisms are ambiguous. In this work, the adsorption mechanisms of formaldehyde in water by silicate adsorbents with different morphologies and pore structures were investigated. Diatomite with disc-like morphology and calcium silicate with short rod-like morphology were selected for comparison. Results show that the adsorption cap...

Abstract Nanocomposite materials containing zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) have demonstrated to be very useful in medical, cosmetic and food industries because of their excellent antibacterial properties. Herein, a facile method is reported for the assembling of ZnO NPs onto the polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) stabilized polystyrene (PS) microspheres to form raspberry-like PS/ZnO composite particles. ZnO NPs is directly obtained by adding the base solution to the aqueous mixture, which contains t...

Abstract In a conventional three-dimensional (3D) cell culture system based on microencapsulation, the calcium alginate microcapsules tend to rupture within 7 days of culture, causing unwanted cell leakage. The microencapsulation based on flicking model of calcium-alginate-polyethylene glycol (Ca-alg-PEG) was proposed to rectify this problem. An analytical model to simulate the flicking process based on the deflection of a needle cantilever was also successfully developed and used to predict the...

Abstract A series of novel 2-quinolone ligands and their corresponding Eu(III) complexes were prepared. The effect of different solvents, different ligand concentrations and different substituents on the fluorescence intensity of ligands were investigated in detail. The fluorescence intensity of Eu(III) complexes were studied by comparing different substituents on the ligand. The results indicate that all ligands show the strongest fluorescence intensity in ethanol with the ligand concentration ...

Abstract In the chemical mechanical polishing (CMP) process of barrier layer of multilayer copper wiring in integrated circuits, it is necessary to add appropriate corrosion inhibitor into the polishing slurry to protect copper from corrosion, reduce the height difference with the barrier material and achieve high planarization. There are few literatures about the behavior of inhibitors on metal surface in CMP studied by computational chemistry. In this study, density functional calculation and ...

Abstract The nitrogen-rich ZnO/g-C3N4 composites were prepared and exhibited excellent photocatalytic performance for hydrogen evolution and NO photo-oxidation under visible-light illumination. The obtained nitrogen-rich ZnO/g-C3N4 composite has efficient visible-light utilization and effective separation of photogenerated electron-hole pairs. Experimental data verifies that the photocatalytic activity of ZnO/g-C3N4 composite could be improved by N dopant. NZnOCN1 composite exhibits the highest ...

Abstract In this work, a novel freestanding flexible reduced graphene oxide (rGO) composite membrane was prepared, using polystyrene microspheres as the spacer to decrease the GO sheet self-stacking, silane coupling agents as the cross-linker to enhance the toughness, and treatment with ammonia followed by hydrochloric acid to partially reduce GO and increase the adsorption capacity. The morphologies and structures of the materials were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, transmission...

Abstract Coalescence of water droplets strongly influences dropwise condensation on hydrophobic surfaces. This work reports a study on experimental data-based statistical modeling to predict the coalescence dynamics of an ensemble of water droplets under the influence of an electrowetting (EW) field. Previous related studies have primarily used high speed visualization to characterize coalescence. However, this study uses statistical modeling to analyze the parameter space associated with EW-ind...
