This study investigates the evaporation of sessile pure water and nano-suspension drops on viscoelastic polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) films. We varied the viscoelasticity of the PDMS films by controlling the curing ratio, and categorized them into three types: stiff (10:1, 20:1, 40:1), soft (60:1, 80:1), and very soft (100:1, 120:1, 140:1, 160:1). On stiff surfaces, pure water drops initially evaporate in a constant contact radius (CCR) mode, followed by a constant contact angle (CCA) mode, and fi...

Super-structures or self-assembled nanoparticles open the development of new materials with improved and/or novel properties. Here, we present nickel fluoride (NiF2) self-assemblies by successive preparatory methods. Originally, the self-assemblies were obtained by exploiting water-in-oil microemulsion technique as a result of auto-organization of hydrated NiF2 (NiF2.4H2O) nanoparticles. The nanostructuration of NiF2.4H2O nanoparticles was confirmed from XRD and TEM data. The size and shape of N...

Probing the interaction mechanism between organic molecules and material surfaces in the presence of metal ions is of great importance in many fields, such as mineral flotation. The collectability of benzohydroxamic acid (BHA) to spodumene (LiAl(SiO3)2) mineral surface during mineral flotation could be enhanced with the addition of metal ion activator - Pb2+ ions. Pb2+ ions could be added as either the Pb-BHA complexes formed by pre-mixing Pb2+ ions and BHA molecules at a given ratio or sequenti...

Within the homologous series of amphiphilic peptides AnK, both A8K and A10K self-assemble in water to form twisted-ribbon fibrils with lengths around 100 nm. The structure of the fibrils can be described in terms of twisted β-sheets extending in the direction of the fibril, laminated to give a constant cross section of 4 nm by 8 nm. The finite width of the twisted ribbons can be reasonably explained within a simple thermodynamic model, considering a free energy penalty for the stretching of hydr...

Herein, the effects of various alcohols on lecithin/CaCl2 organogels are investigated. Mixtures of lecithin and CaCl2 form reverse cylindrical micelles resulting in optically transparent organogels. The addition of various alcohols to a mixture of lecithin and CaCl2 induces a decrease in viscosity, through which reverse cylindrical micelles are transformed to spherical micelles (or short cylindrical micelles). Long hydrocarbon chain alcohols decrease the viscosity of lecithin/CaCl2 mixtures more...

Confinement of liquid crystals in polymeric fibers offers a promising strategy to control liquid crystal response to external stimuli. Here, the confinement of 4-cyano-4'-pentylbiphenyl (5CB), a nematic liquid crystal (LC), within the core of coaxially electrospun fibers composed of poly(vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP) containing different surfactants are discussed. The effects of surfactant type, surfactant concentration, and core flow rate (confinement) on the LC behavior were demonstrated using polar...
Lack of potable water in communities across the globe is a serious humanitarian problem promoting the desalination of saline water (seawater and brackish water) to meet the growing demands of human civilization. Multiple ionic species can be present in natural water sources in addition to NaCl salt, and capacitive deionization (CDI) is an upcoming technology with the potential to address these challenges because of its efficacy in removing charged species from water by electro-adsorption. In thi...

Self-assembly of copolymer is an important approach to obtain multifarious nanostructures. Polymerization-induced self-assembly (PISA) is a recently developed and powerful copolymer self-assembly strategy. However, some researchers have reported a different morphology prepared by PISA and the traditional copolymer self-assembly using the same copolymer system. In this work, to explore the mystery, we develop a precise mesoscopic dissipative particle dynamics (DPD) model to reveal insights into t...

The application of polymer nanoparticles has progressively broadened. There is now increasing interest in smaller polymer nanoparticles for use in organic solar cells and drug delivery systems. Unfortunately, it is difficult to control the particle size below 50 nm with conventional synthesis methods. Our previously proposed "two-step nanoprecipitation method" overcomes this problem. An oil-in-water emulsion is first formed from polymer solution and de-ionized water without using surfactant; it ...
