Bicelles are submicrometer-sized disc-shaped molecular self-assemblies that can be obtained in aqueous solution by dispersing mixtures of certain amphiphiles. Although phospholipid bicelle and phospholipid vesicle assemblies adopt similar lipid bilayer structures, the differences in bilayer characteristics, especially physicochemical properties such as bilayer fluidity, are not clearly understood. Herein, we report the lipid ordering properties of bicelle bilayer membranes based on induced circu...

Supra-amphiphiles constituted of noncovalent bonds have emerged as attractive systems for fabrication of stimuli-responsive self-assembled nanostructures. A unique supramolecular strategy utilizing halogen (X)-bonding interaction has been demonstrated for constructing emissive supra-π-amphiphiles in water from a hydrophobic pyridyl functionalized naphthalene monoimide (NMI-Py) based X-bond acceptor and hydrophilic iodotetrafluorophenyl functionalized polyethylene glycol (PEG-I) or triethylene gl...

Microalgae biofilm-based culture systems have wide applications in environmental engineering and biotechnology. Biofilm structure is critical for the transport of nutrients, gas, and signaling molecules in a microalgal biofilm. This work aims to understand the influence of cell surface energy (SE) on the microalgal biofilm structure. Three microalgae species were used as model cells in the study: Chlorella sp., Nannochloris oculata, and Chlorella pyrenoidosa. First, by mediating biofilm culture ...

Interaction among concentrated spherical polyelectrolyte brushes (SPB) dispersions in water was systematically investigated by means of small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), wide angle X-ray scattering (WAXS), and rheological methods. SPB consist of a core of polystyrene (PS) and a poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) brush shell. The "polyelectrolyte peak" appeared in SAXS spectra, and was observed in WAXS curves for the first time. The size of "polyelectrolyte peak" and the rheological properties of SPB we...

The exploration of original computed tomography (CT) imaging contrast agents with enhanced sensitivity and specificity is currently one of the major challenging tasks for precision medicine. Herein, we develop an innovative nanoprobe of dendrimer-stabilized gold nanoparticles (Au DSNs) linked with folic acid (FA) as a targeting ligand and diatrizoic acid (DTA) for specific enhanced tumor CT imaging. In current work, poly(amidoamine) (PAMAM) dendrimers of generation 5 (G5) with amine termini wer...

Carboxyl polyether ionophores (CPIs) are widely used as veterinary antibiotics and to increase food-utilization in ruminating animals. Furthermore, CPIs can target drug-resistant bacteria but detailed knowledge about their mode-of-action is needed in order to develop agents with a reasonable therapeutic index. It has been suggested that ionophores bind to membranes and incur large structural changes to shield a bound ion from the hydrophobic environment of the lipid bilayer for transport. One cr...

The tunable surface-wetting properties of photosensitive random copolymer mats were used to spatially control the orientations of thin-film block copolymer (BCP) structures. A photosensitive mat was produced via thermal treatment on spin-coated random copolymers of poly(styrene-ran-2-nitrobenzyl methacrylate-ran-glycidyl methacrylate), synthesized via reversible-deactivation radical polymerization. The degree of UV-induced deprotection of the nitrobenzyl esters in the mat was precisely controll...

Alumina-functionalized ordered mesoporous silica SBA-15 particles have been proposed to stabilize Pickering emulsions. Functionalization of SBA-15 particles have been performed by depositing alumina using a two-step synthesis (first, silica condensation, followed by alumina precipitation). Three different Al to Si ratios have been prepared. The calcined materials have been characterized by TEM, SEM, XRD, N2 physisorption, zeta potential, in order determine key physico-chemical properties, and th...
