Background: High protein diets increase satiety and may decrease energy intake. Many over- weight people overeat in the evening. We hypothesized that ingesting protein prior to the eve- ning meal may limit successive calorie intake and generate weight loss. Aims: To explore whether protein pre-load before the evening meal will lead to weight loss compared to eating as usual. Methods: 129 adults with a Body Mass Index (BMI) ≥25 reporting eating large evening meals were randomized to either consum...

The purpose of this study was to assess of calcium intervention on the effectiveness of a weight-loss program for obese people. All subjects had an initial BMI (body mass index) >24 kg/m 2 and low calcium diet (<500 mg/d). Forty-two healthy overweight or obese people were randomly and equally divided into two groups: a Hi-Ca group (female: 16, male: 5) and a control group (female: 16, male: 5). In the Hi-Ca group, we provided two bottles of Hi-Ca drinks per day and a low energy diet (energy: 120...

Background: Cardiovascular diseases in women are increasing at an alarming rate but very little attention has been given due to economic and socio-cultural reasons. A study was un- dertaken to examine the relationship between cardiovascular diseases and nutritional status in Pakistani women. Methods: A case-control study was carried out in the Outpatients department (OPD) of the Cardiology Unit, Rehman Medical Institute (RMI), Peshawar, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan. The inclusion criteria for se...

The mature epidermis is an effective barrier which prevents the body from dehydration and protects it against various environmental influences. If the natural barrier is immature or damaged, the skin barrier is impaired and desiccation occurs. Hence, the regeneration of impaired skin is an essential process for survival. In patients, the natural recovery is sometimes rather slow, in particular in the cases of large defects. To support skin regeneration, a large variety of skin creams is presentl...

The Anaphase-Promoting Complex/Cyclosome (APC/C) is a ubiquitin ligase that promotes degradation of mitotic regulators. Activation of the APC/C requires either Cdc20 or Cdh1, together with phosphorylation. In chapter 2 of this thesis, we show that Polo-like kinase-1 (Plk1) is required for activation of Cdh1-dependent APC/C function during late mitosis. Plk1-depletion prevents dephoshorylation of Cdh1. We found that Plk1 mediates its effect on Cdh1 through phosphorylation of the phosphatase Cdc14...

This research aims at experimentally monitoring nonlinear generation and propagation of picosecond coherent acoustic strain wave packets in solids. The experiments are performed by ultrafast pump-probe reflectometry and interferometry. At first, nonlinear strain generation in thin nickel and chromium films is characterized. At high pump fluences, the elevated electron and lattice temperatures in the absorption layer significantly modify thermal and mechanical material parameters, thereby increas...

Following widespread application of assisted reproductive technology modalities and the increased age of motherhood, the incidence of twin gestations has increased markedly. Twins are either monozygotic or dizygotic. Dizygotic (i.e. fraternal) twins result from the fertilization of two different eggs and are per definition dichorionic (DC). Chorionicity of monozygotic twins (i.e. identical twins) depends on timing of splitting of the fertilized egg. If splitting occurs within three days after fe...

The goal of high--energy heavy--ion physics is the full characterization of the quark--gluon plasma (QGP), which is a phase of strongly interacting matter where quarks and gluons are no longer confined in the nucleons and can move freely over longer distances. Such a phase probably existed shortly after the Big Bang, and can be produced in laboratory by heavy--ion collisions at a sufficiently large energy density. This new phase of matter is distinctly different from usual hadronic matter. Sever...
