Fast-growing forest species established in tropical regions can supply much of the demand for renewable energy. The use of tree bark for energy is an alternative to gainfully exploit the residues generated by the forest industry. The aim of this study was to evaluate the potential of incorporation of bark in Schizolobium parahyba and Eucalyptus urophylla wood for energy purposes. The two species were planted with 3.0 m × 3.0 m spacing, in the central region of Brazil. The wood samples with and w...

Aimed to obtain high-quality pyrolysis liquid products, the effects of different calcium-based catalysts and temperatures on liquid products from catalytic pyrolysis of municipal sludge (moisture of 50%) were studied. Results showed that the liquid product yield reached maximum at 600 °C and then decreased. The catalyst capability of catalysts decreased the yield of liquid products in the order of poorly soluble in water (Ca(OH)2, CaCO3, CaO) > soluble in water (CaCl2, Ca(H2PO4)2·H2O). High temp...

Enrichment of biomass containing high lipid content is the key limiting step for the utilization of cyanobacterial feedstock in biodiesel production. This study investigated the influence of antibiotics on the biodiesel productivity of a model biodiesel-producing cyanobacterium (Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803) through a 18-day exposure test and observed that 100 ng/L of ciprofloxacin, amoxicillin, and spiramycin significantly (p < 0.05) increased biomass, chlorophyll a content, and Fv/Fm value and r...

Thermophilic anaerobic digestion (TAD) is an efficient method for biogas production. In this study, the TAD of Arundo donax cv. Lvzhou No. 1 (ADL-1, a new kind of energy crop with high cold tolerance) at different growth stages was carried out, in order to investigate the relationship between microbial community structure and its function during the fermentation process. The results showed that the most optimal growth period of ADL-1 was 3 months, regarding the yield of biogas production. The TA...

Napier grass (Pennisetum purpureum) is a high yield tropical grass with great potential for anaerobic digestion. Two-phase anaerobic dry digestion (TADD), considered an alternative for anaerobic wet digestion system (AWD) with only front-end leach bed reactor (LBR), is added to existing liquid digester, was tested under different leachate circulations, and was compared with AWD. Leachate circulation frequency in LBR was found to highly influence hydrolysis rate and hence improved overall digesti...
5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) is considered a platform chemical used for producing industrial purpose carbon-based compounds. During HMF synthesis, the compound furfural (FF) is formed as a byproduct. Using spectrophotometric UV is not feasible because HMF and FF overlap around 280 nm, demanding separation techniques as high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). This work aimed at applying a synthetic route for HMF production by using wastes such as sugarcane bagasse and peanut hull, and dev...

More stable enzymes with improved properties are in constant demand for various biotechnological processes. In this work, it was found that the activity of recombinant purified β-xylosidase II (CcXynB2) from the bacterium Caulobacter crescentus is increased 62% by 5 mM KCl, likely due to the presence of K+ ions. CcXynB2 activity was measured in the presence of various compounds that have been described as inhibitors of lignocellulosic biomass hydrolysis and fermentation. CcXynB2 was found to be ...

The bioeconomy strategies in the EU are expected to lead to increased consumption of woody biomass. The empirical knowledge of asexually regenerated hybrid aspen (Populus tremula L. × P. tremuloides Michx.) coppice stand production and responses to silvicultural treatments is still poor. In hemiboreal Estonia, four different management treatments (corridor thinning with ~67% removal, cross-corridor thinning with ~89% removal, single-tree thinning with ~97% removal and control with no management ...

To simplify the procedure of biogas production using agricultural straw as raw materials, the biogas performance of both dry and fresh rice straw (RS) was assessed during batch anaerobic digestion (AD) at 35 °C. The results showed that biogas production from fresh RS was 400.5 mL/g volatile solids (VS), which was 40.9% larger than that from dry RS substrate. Meanwhile, the methane content in biogas from fresh RS was 56.05% (approximately 2.5% larger than for dry RS), and the VS removal rate from...
