Exploring appropriate carbonisation process parameters is important for optimising the recycling of waste bamboo chopsticks as an alternative solid fuel for traditional ironmaking. The purpose of this research was to reveal the influence of the pyrolysis temperature on the structural features and combustion behaviour of waste bamboo chopstick chars. The fixed carbon content of waste bamboo chopstick chars increased from 46.57% to 82.83% and the volatile content decreased from 56.43% to 6.86% wit...

In a two-stage anaerobic digestion (AD) process approach, the relation between the type of fermentation that occurs during the acidogenic stage and methane production potential from tequila vinasse (TV) remains unexplored. This study aimed to investigate the effect of lactate fermentation type on the biochemical methane potential (BMP) of TV. To this end, a series of batch cultures were carried out to perform two sequential lactate-type fermentations, i.e., first (carbohydrates → lactate + aceta...

Industrialization and energy demand increase are highlighted as consequences of world population growth for decades. Thereby, aiming to contribute to sustainable processes capable of mitigating the effects resulting from this process, biofuels have been intensively researched, produced and used in recent years. Among the possibilities, dimethyl ether (DME) stands out with great prospects replacing liquefied petroleum gas and diesel due to its potential as clean fuel. This work aims to conjoin th...

The ultrasound exposure can affect the Saccharomyces cerevisiae growth and metabolic product generation. This study evaluated the effect of ultrasound on S. cerevisiae stimulation in lag and exponential phase cultured in defatted rice bran (DRB) employing a full-factorial design. Firstly, the DRB was hydrolyzed by protease, α-amylase, and amyloglucosidase; the hydrolyzed DRB (HDRB; 30 g L−1) was used as substrate for S. cerevisiae. The variables ultrasound power (132 to 330 W) and duty cycle (25...

Thermodynamics and kinetics are the two key factors in optimizing the biomass derived gas reforming to obtain syngas. In this study, the effects of components of simulated biomass derived gas (CH4, CO2, H2, CO, N2, and steam), reforming conditions, and different reactions on products distribution were investigated under thermodynamic equilibrium using Gibbs free energy minimization method so as to optimize the reforming conditions and provide theoretical basis for further reforming of biomass de...

The effects of light spectra on cell concentration, cell size, biomass production, proximate composition, pigment content, and fatty acid content in Chlorella vulgaris during two growth phases were measured. Growth rates were higher with white (0.70 division day−1) and blue light (0.67 divisions day−1). Cell size was greater in the exponential growth with yellow light (16.29 μm) versus blue light (14.26 μm). Higher organic dry weight (ODW) values were observed during exponential growth under gre...

Winter rye (Secale cereale L.), a potential alternative biogas substrate, is traditionally bred for grain yield. Thus, our objective was to evaluate the possibility to predict dry matter yield combining vegetation indices derived from visible to NIR spectral data as a proxy for agronomic traits. A total of 404 elite rye hybrids were tested for grain yield, and a subset of this comprising 274 hybrids were also tested for dry matter yield over 2 years and at 4 locations in Germany bringing the tot...

Due to the overuse of natural gas and petroleum in Bangladesh, the excessive greenhouse gas (GHG) emission continuously worsens the countries’ air quality. To resolve this environmental concern as well as determine the sustainable bioenergy sources, research on biomass for biofuel production has been highlighted recently. Therefore, this study emphasized to identify a novel biomass for solid fuel generation as well as designed a pilot-scale biofuel production scheme. The study endeavoured to cha...
