Abstract Cellulose paper-chitosan (CC) double-layer films containing epsilon-poly- l -lysine (e-PL) (0.5 and 1% w/v) were developed. FTIR analysis showed a strong association between the e-PL and CC film. Antimicrobial activity against Listeria monocytogenes was investigated both in vitro and in the chicken breast meat. The CC films without e-PL showed no antimicrobial activity, while the addition of e-PL induced significant (p 0.05). This study revealed an antimicrobial activity for CC films im...

Abstract In this study, pretreatment procedures have been investigated preceding the standard production of chitin and chitosan. These steps can be used in industrial processes to preserve raw shrimp shells as long as the amount of material is not enough for one production batch. After these treatments, shrimp shells are clean and are facile for further demineralization, deproteinization and deacetylation processes. The prepared chitin and chitosan show a high purity with very low ash (less than...

Abstract Two Pseudomonas strains were isolated from the strawberry leaves. The O-antigens were obtained using phenol-water method and mild acid degradation. The following structures of the O-polysaccharides were established by sugar analysis and 2D NMR spectroscopy: OPS of Pseudomonas koreensis BIM B-970G →3)-α-D-FucNAcp-(1 → 2)-β-D-Quip3NAc-(1 → 3)-α-L-6dTalp4OAc-(1→ OPS of Pseudomonas oryzihabitans BIM B-1072 G →4)-α-L-FucpNAm3OAc-(1 → 3)-α-D-QuipNAc-(1 → 4)-β-D-GlcpNAc3NAcA-(1→ Where Am – ace...

Abstract The wide use of chitosan microspheres in pharmaceutical applications, mainly in the controlled release of drugs and as a bactericidal agent, has been widely reported in the literature. However, these important biomaterial applications with multifunctionality is still scarce. In this study, epichlorohydrin-crosslinked chitosan microspheres were prepared and evaluated for Ag+ adsorption and formation of silver nanoparticles. The hybrid material obtained was used to antibacterial activity ...

Abstract Dermatan sulfate (DS) is a glycosaminoglycan (GAG) that is produced through the epimerization of the glucuronic acid on chondroitin sulfate into iduronic acid (IduA) by dermatan sulfate epimerase (DS-epi) 1 and 2. Proteoglycans (PGs) play essential physiological and pathological roles during cellular development, proliferation, differentiation, and cancer metastasis. DS proteoglycans play vital roles during the process of tumorigenesis, due to the increased flexibility of the polysaccha...

Abstract The glucosinolate (GSL) profiles of wild-growing plants from the genus Hesperis, i.e. Hesperis laciniata All. (leaf, stem, flower, and root) from Croatia and Hesperis matronalis L. (leaf, stem, flower, seed, and root) from Canada, were established by LC-MS. During this investigation, 5-(methylsulfanyl)pentyl- (3), 6-(methylsulfanyl)hexyl- (4), 6-(methylsulfinyl)hexyl- (6), and 4′-α-L-rhamnopyranosyloxybenzyl- (17) GSLs were identified. In addition, the presence of 7-(methylsulfinyl)hept...

Abstract Microporous and mesoporous minerals are key elements of advanced technological cycles nowadays. Nature-driven microporous materials are known for biocompatibility and renewability. Zeolite is known as an eminent microporous hydrated aluminosilicate mineral containing alkali metals. It is commercially available as adsorbent and catalyst. However, the large quantity of water uptake occupies active sites of zeolite making it less efficient. The widely-used chitosan polysaccharide has also ...
Abstract This work presents a kinetic investigation of dilute sulfuric acid hydrolysis of bleached hardwood kraft pulp. The temperature-time dependence shows fast xylose extraction during the initial period of the process, while the glucose content increases slowly and permanently over the period. A conversion of xylose into furfural and furfural-derived chromophores is observed. It is established that only a low-brightness microcrystalline cellulose when a degree of polymerization below 300 can...
