Mineral compositions and textures of Late Miocene coesite eclogite from Tomagabuna Island were investigated to constrain P–T conditions during UHP metamorphism and subsequent exhumation. Two stages of garnet growth (core and rim), at eclogite-facies conditions, were documented. In addition to core garnet (I), peak assemblages include omphacite, coesite, phengite, and rutile. Rim garnet (II), amphibole, paragonite, plagioclase, quartz, and accessory biotite and spinel were formed after peak press...

A new activity model for Mg–Al biotites was formulated through an integrated approach combining various experimental results (calorimetry, line-broadening in infrared (IR) spectra, analysis of existing phase-equilibrium data) with density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The resulting model has a sound physical-experimental basis. It considers the three end-members phlogopite (Phl, KMg3[(OH)2AlSi3O10]), ordered eastonite (Eas, KMg2Al[(OH)2Al2Si2O10]), and disordered eastonite (dEas) and, th...

Because of the strong preference of fluorine (F) for “hydrous” magnesian silicate minerals, the temperature T(0F) given by the reaction (Bi–Gt) of Fe–Mg exchange between biotite and garnet [phlogopite (Phl) + almandine (Alm) = annite (Ann) + pyrope (Py)] can be dramatically underestimated when the reciprocal effects between octahedral and hydroxyl site occupancies in biotite are ignored. In the granulites of southeastern Madagascar, widespread Mg metasomatism was associated with F-rich fluids. I...

Textures of Bushveld chromite from thin seams and accessory disseminations in the Platreef and the northernmost Waterberg Project area were compared with textures of xenocrystic chromite from mantle xenoliths found in Neogene basalt in the Kurile Island Arc. The sieve-textured to symplectic rims around the resorbed chromite in the Kurile samples resulted from the reaction between chromite and chromite-undersaturated basaltic melt, with the inclusions in chromite being entrapped during episodes o...

The links between deformation-induced micro- and nanostructures and trace element mobility in sulphide minerals have recently become a popular subject of research in the Earth sciences due to its connections with metallic ore paragenesis. It has been shown that plastic deformation in pyrite creates diffusion pathways in the form of low-angle grain boundaries that act as traps for base- and precious-metals. However, the plastic behavior of pyrite and the physiochemical processes that concentrate ...

Skarn garnets in the Mineral King roof pendant of the south–central Sierra Nevada within Sequoia National Park, California, USA reveal variable fluid chemistry with a significant component of meteoric water during metasomatism in the Early Cretaceous Sierra Nevada Batholith. We focus on andradite garnet associated with Pb–Zn mineralization in the White Chief Mine. Laser fluorination oxygen isotope analyses of δ18O of garnet (δ18O(Grt)) from sites along the skarn show a large range of values (− 8...

Western Tethyan peridotites exposed in the European Alps show limited amounts of partial melting and mostly fertile compositions. Here we investigate the Civrari Ophiolite (northwestern Italy), which is composed of depleted spinel-harzburgites and serpentinites associated with MOR-type gabbros and basalts. The ultramafic rocks are unique amongst western Tethyan peridotites, showing homogeneous residual compositions after ~ 15% near-fractional melting, lack of pervasive melt percolation and miner...

Numerous analyses of multiple ilmenite, titanomagnetite, sanidine, plagioclase, biotite, orthopyroxene, and clinopyroxene crystals (when present) in each of 24 single-clast pumices from the Bishop Tuff (BT), CA are presented, together with whole-rock compositions on the same single clasts. Data from multiple Fe–Ti oxide grains in each sample, coupled with an assessment of analytical uncertainty, show that there is a single population of ilmenite and titanomagnetite in each of 20 samples and no m...

Intergrowths of baddeleyite have been found in zircon grain interiors from amphibolite- and granulite-facies felsic rocks from southwest Greenland. The zircon grains are either close to or in direct contact with quartz. A series of experiments has been conducted using natural, unaltered zircon grains ± SiO2 in H2O–CaCl2, and H2O–Ca(OH)2 solutions with varying molar proportions of Ca to Si at 900 °C; 1000 MPa and 600 °C; 400 MPa for 4–50 days. Experimental results indicate that baddeleyite formed...
