Abstract This study investigated the probiotic effects of one lactobacillus, one marine yeast, mix of three bacilli and mix of all probiotic strains on the growth, survival, antioxidant response (superoxide dismutase = SOD, catalase = CAT, gluthatione peroxidase = GPX) and immune response (lysozyme = LYZ, heat shock protein =HSP70) of hatchery-reared Catarina scallop Argopecten ventricosus early spat. The spat was exposed every three days for 28 days to a single dose of 1 × 106 CFU mL–1 of one o...

Abstract The purpose of this in situ study was to determine the pattern of protandrous hermaphrodite Ceratothoa oestroides infestation in sea bass with respect to parasite sexual behaviour. Sea bass (N = 618) were divided into six net cages which presented three experimental groups. Group 1 represented infected fish, where female parasites were manually removed and male parasites were left in the buccal cavity of fish. Group 2 represented infected fish where both female and male parasites were r...

Abstract The aim of the present study was to evaluate the possibility of replacing part of the dietary corn meal (CM) with whole banana meal (WBM) in the practical diet for tambaqui (Colossoma macropomum). Two experiments were performed. The first evaluated WBM digestibility. Apparent digestibility coefficients (ADC) (crude protein, crude energy and dry matter) were measured for 80 fish, allocated to two treatments in quadruplicate for the WBM diet and a reference diet (RD). The second experimen...

Abstract Immune functions in teleosts are straightly influenced by environmental temperature. Low temperatures usually affect negatively the immune status of fishes favoring the incidence of diseases. Immune cells in fishes are protected from peroxidation by dietary vitamin E. Innate immune defenses of Piaractus mesopotamicus were evaluated in fish fed with diets supplemented with vitamin E for 45 days. The fish endured decreases in environmental fluctuations of temperature for 24 and 72 h. The ...

Abstract Understanding the thermal tolerance of both candidate and potential aquaculture species is important for determining their temperature limit at certain stages of culture. The aim of the present work was to determine the effect of acclimation at different temperatures on the Critical Thermal Maxima (CTMax) and escaping temperature (Tesc) and Acclimation Response Ratio (ARR) of the mud crab, Scylla olivacea, and the crenate swimming crab, Thalamita crenata. Immature crabs (N = 135) were a...

Abstract The present study identified the volatile compounds profile in raw muscle of triploid rainbow trout with different marketable sizes (eviscerated weight: 2 kg, 3 kg and 4 kg, respectively). Six fish per each size treatment were sampled in a local commercial trout farm, then raw muscles of sampled fish were filleted to detect the volatile compounds by using the gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC MS) analysis coupled with automated solid-phase microextraction (SPME) system. Results s...

Abstract The goal of this study was to investigate the effects of dietary Cu on growth, antioxidant capacity and immune responses in juvenile blunt snout bream with histological examination. Fish were fed three practical diets containing graded copper levels ranging from 1.43 mg/kg-9.13 mg/kg for 10 weeks. The control diet (1.43 mg/kg) significantly improved the growth performance of blunt snout bream (P

Abstract L-carnitine is a functional aquafeed additive for enhancing lipid catabolism by elevating mitochondrial fatty acid β-oxidation and modulating energy metabolism to provide a “protein sparing effect”. However, results on the effects of dietary l -carnitine on nutrient metabolism in fish are still conflicting. We explored comprehensively the effects of dietary l -carnitine on energy metabolism in Nile tilapia. We fed Nile tilapia for eight weeks with diets supplemented with l -carnitine or...

Abstract The current study aimed to evaluate whether clenbuterol, a β2-adrenergic agonist, supplementation in Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) diets can influence growth and blood parameters. Besides, assessment of adipogenic genes as fatty acid synthase (FAS) and lipoprotein lipase (LPL) which is a key enzyme in the regulation of the flux of fatty acids in liver, muscle, and adipose tissue as well as muscle growth-regulating genes as myostatin (MYO) in muscle and insulin-like growth factor-...

Abstract This study evaluates the effects of dietary mannan oligosaccharides (MOS) supplementation on growth performance and antioxidant capacity, as well as investigates its related signalling molecule mechanism in the intestine of on-growing grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella). A total of 540 on-growing grass carp (215.85 ± 0.30 g) were fed six diets containing graded levels of MOS supplementation (0, 200, 400, 600, 800 and 1000 mg kg−1) for 60 days. Subsequently, a challenge test was conduct...
