Abstract Creating different redox conditions in different regions can be effective for nutrient removal in a single bioreactor. Jet loop-airlift bioreactors are presented as an innovative system that can provide regions with different oxidation–reduction potentials (ORP). In the present study, the performance of a novel jet loop-airlift bioreactor for the simultaneous removal of nutrients from soft drink wastewater (SDW) (COD:N:P of 100:16:1) was investigated. The anoxic and aerobic zones with s...

Abstract The effects of 24-epibrassinolide (Br24) or 28-homobrassinolide (Br28) on the formation of iron plaque (IP) and the uptake of As and Cd by rice plant are poorly understood. Thus, the current work was performed to examine the impacts of Br24/Br28 (10−8 M) application on IP formation (50 mg Fe2+ L−1 supply) and their interactions on As and Cd accumulation in rice seedlings exposed to As (III) (0.5 mg L−1) and/or Cd (0.5 mg L−1) stresses by a hydroponic experiment. The results showed that ...

Abstract Palygorskite fibres and halloysite nanotubes (HNT) were used for the Fe (II) uptake from aqueous solutions under various experimental conditions. Palygorskite and halloysite samples were characterized using XRD, FTIR, SEM, BET and CEC and then were saturated by exchanging Ca + 2 cations. The Ca-Palygorskite (Ca-Pal) and Ca-Halloysite (Ca-Hall) were characterized as well, and applied in batch kinetic experiments series. It was shown that both Ca-treated clay minerals were more efficient ...
Abstract Emerging pollutants are well-known chemicals without regulatory status that produce a significant environmental impact reaching aquatic and land ecosystems with a negative effect in the provision of ecosystem services. The aim of this work is the removal of tetracycline, through adsorption processes, from water by using alginate/chitosan microbeads enriched with TiO 2 . Through the photodegradation of the tetracycline, the recycle of the adsorbent is proposed under proper experimental c...

Abstract The up-flow solar septic tank (UTST) and multi-soil layering (MSL) system has been developed and proposed as “Nouveau Design Solar Septic Tank”. The objective of this study was to verify functionality of the integrated UTST and MSL system for treatment of toilet wastewater (or black water) under actual conditions over a year at the Asian Institute of Technology campus, Pathumthani province, central Thailand. During the operation period which involved fluctuating flow rates, ambient temp...
Abstract Biochar is the solid by-product of biomass thermochemical conversion via pyrolysis technique. Biochar addition to croplands as an organic amendment can improve soil properties and increase agricultural productivity. However, these positive effects depend largely on biomass feedstock and pyrolysis conditions. In this study, nutrient release from biochars derived from the slow pyrolysis of exhausted grape marc (EGM) at 300, 400 and 500 °C (EGM300, EGM400 and EGM500) was investigated throu...

Abstract Biocathode microbial desalination cell represent an energy yielding technology for reducing the organic compounds of petroleum refinery effluent (PRE) coupled with sea water desalination and bioelectricity production. The synergistic interaction between the microalgae Scenedesmus abundans and the bacteria played the major role in reduction of organic compounds present in PRE. It was observed that microalgae grown in 50% PRE produced maximum growth absorbance of 2.058, chlorophyll and ca...

Abstract Based on the research background of government-subsidized new energy vehicle market, this paper constructs a profit distribution model of closed-loop supply chain members without financial subsidies and with different objects of government subsidies. Using the idea and method of game theory, the profit distribution of five models of supply chain members is solved respectively, and the sales channel pricing, recovery channel pricing, change the range of profit of each supply chain member...
Abstract In the present study, effect of biogas recirculation on slurry characterization, microbial activity and biogas purification were studied. Two digester units, one for control treatment and another equipped with a gas compression system for recirculation treatment, were designed and constructed. Experimental results showed that the recirculation system could improve the mixing process with a little energy consumption. The slurry analysis during the digestion indicated that (i) in the reci...

Abstract Prosopis juliflora or Mesquite, one of the world’s worst invaders, yields low-purity peroxidases (MPx), which remove phenols from the wastewater of textile and leather industries. Within 30 min, MPx removes phenols from wastewater of the textile industry (94.95 ± 0.82%) and leather industry (91.49 ± 1.54%). After treatment with MPx, the residual phenol in the wastewater remained much below the environmentally safe limit outlined by the USEPA. For maximum phenols removal, MPx requires 4–...
