Background Living kidney transplantation comprises the majority of kidney transplantations in Japan. Living kidney donors should be assured of their own health. Therefore, Japanese guidelines define the criterion of kidney function for living donors. Glomerular filtration rates (GFR) ≥ 70 mL/min/1.73 m2 are required for marginal donors. The guidelines require that GFRs of donors be measured by the inulin (In) clearance method (CIn) or the radioisotope method, but these methods can be substituted...

The annual survey of the Japanese Society for Dialysis Therapy Renal Data Registry (JRDR) was conducted for 4413 dialysis facilities at the end of 2017; among which 4360 facilities (98.8%) responded to the facility questionnaire, and 4188 (94.9%) responded to the patient questionnaire. The response rate of the 2017 survey was comparable with the past, even though it was the third year after the new anonymization method. The number of chronic dialysis patients in Japan continues to increase every...

Transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) has evolved to be a treatment of choice in high-risk patients with aortic stenosis (AS). However, it is not known whether TAVI is safe and beneficial for the creation of arteriovenous fistula for maintenance hemodialysis in high-risk patients with severe AS. A 91-year-old woman was referred to our hospital due to oligoanuria and progressive renal dysfunction. She was diagnosed with anti-glomerular basement membrane (GBM) disease. She had hypertensio...

Kidneys are affected by human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection and its associated therapies. Antiretroviral therapy (ART) has markedly reduced acquired immune deficiency syndrome–related deaths and opportunistic infectious diseases among HIV-infected patients. This contributed to their prolonged survival; however, the improvement in survival has been accompanied by an increase in the incidence of non-infectious chronic complications, including hypertension, metabolic diseases, and chronic ...

Background Thrombotic microangiopathy (TMA) in patients with connective tissue disease is rare but life-threatening. In particular, the survival rate of patients with dermatomyositis (DM) that develop TMA is low. The effectiveness of plasma exchange (PEX) therapy is unclear for the treatment of TMA secondary to DM.

Taste disorder is a common problem in patients with chronic kidney disease and end-stage renal disease. Specifically, salty taste disorder is associated with excess salt intake. Many factors affect taste activity; however, data focused on peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients are limited. This study aimed to investigate the distribution of the gustatory threshold for salty taste and to clarify its relevant contributing factors in PD patients. In this retrospective cross-sectional study, we enrolled ...

Background In patients undergoing home dialysis, conventionally, Kt/V has been regarded as an index of the removal efficiency per dialysis session. However, more recently, it has been considered that the hemodialysis product (HDP), rather than the Kt/V, is better associated with the clinical symptoms and outcomes in patients undergoing short daily dialysis or nocturnal dialysis. Nevertheless, the HDP lacks a theoretical background, and it does not take into consideration the dialyzer clearance o...
