Nutritional Genomics or nutrigenetics/nutrigenomics is an emerging area of research aiming to delineate the interplay between nutrients intake and the reciprocal pathologies with the human genome. Coupled with other omics disciplines, such as metabolomics, proteomics and transcriptomics, nutrigenomics aspires to individualize nutrition, reminiscent of pharmacogenomics and the individualization of drug use. Here, we provide an overview of a session focused on nutrigenomics, organized in conjuncti...

Aim: To describe pharmacogenomic tumor testing among patients with metastatic colorectal cancer. Methods: This was a retrospective study of patients with metastatic colorectal cancer diagnosed between 1 January 2014 and 30 June 2018. Patients were assessed for pharmacogenomic testing and appropriateness of chemotherapy use. Results: Overall, 112/167 (67.1%) patients had at least one of the three recommended pharmacogenomic tests and 41/167 (24.6%) had all tests. Twenty-four patients were treated...

Aim: miRNAs play an important role in breast cancer (BC). Variations in miRNAs influence their maturation, expression and consequently regulation of their target genes. Materials & methods: In this study, single nucleotide polymorphism rs11614913 was genotyped in BC patients (n = 300) and 230 controls by employing tetra primer amplification refractory mutation system PCR and Sanger sequencing (Macrogen Korea). Results: A significant difference was observed in the genotypes through co-dominant (c...

Aim: Pulmonary toxicity is a well-known adverse reaction of bleomycin. In this study, we investigated the influence of XPC, PMAIP1/Noxa and TLR4 genetic variants on the development of bleomycin-induced lung injury (BILI) in south Indian patients with Hodgkin lymphoma. Materials & methods: Hodgkin lymphoma patients receiving adriamycin, bleomycin, vinblastine and dacarbazine regimen were recruited for the study and BILI was diagnosed based on symptoms and/or radiological signs. DNA samples were g...

Improving disease risk prediction and tailoring preventive interventions to patient risk factors is one of the primary goals of precision medicine. Family health history is the traditional approach to quickly gather genetic and environmental data relevant to the patient. While the utility of family health history is well-documented, its utilization is variable, in part due to lack of patient and provider knowledge and incomplete or inaccurate data. With the advances and reduced costs of sequenci...

Aim: This study investigated the molecular mechanism underlying the involvement of miR-885 in the signaling pathways of VDR. Results: Based on their rs739837 genotype, the subjects were divided into a case group and a control group. Logistic regression was carried out to study the impact of rs739837 genotypes on the severity of asthma, and it was found that the minor allele (T) of rs739837 significantly increased the severity of asthma. Using a luciferase assay, VDR was confirmed as a miR-885 ta...

Sorafenib is acknowledged as the standard therapy for advanced hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) but in the clinical practice the treatment of these patients is extremely complex and needs to be personalized. New evidence suggests that surgical resection-based multimodal treatments may improve outcome in these patients. There is no strong evidence supporting the ability of sorafenib in downstage HCC before surgery. We presented a case of a 53-year-old man with well-compensated HCV-cirrhosis complic...

Aim: The ICPerMed, international initiative promoting personalized medicine, has realized a survey among a group of experts, to define a common vision for the deployment of personalized medicine across healthcare systems until 2030. Materials & methods: ICPerMed defined five perspectives (p.4) and addressed an online questionnaire to 97 international experts to collect their views. Results: Seventy (72%) of the 97 experts effectively answered the survey from which 69 answers were exploitable. Re...

Aim: Direct-to-consumer (DTC) genetic tests (GT) have created controversy regarding their risks and benefits. In view of recent regulatory developments, this article aims to explore the attitudes of European clinical geneticists toward the oversight of DTC GT. Materials & methods: Fifteen semi-structured interviews were performed with clinical geneticists based in ten European countries. The transcripts were thematically analysized in an iterative process. Results & conclusion: Respondents stron...
