Abstract Artemargyinolide E (AE), a new sesquiterpene lactone was isolated from the traditional Chinese medicine Artemisia argyi. Its structure was elucidated based on the extensive analysis of spectroscopic data. The absolute configuration of AE was assigned by X-ray crystallographic analysis. The effect of AE and its mechanism on lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced inflammatory responses in macrophages were investigated. AE displayed the inhibitory activity on the production of nitrogen oxide (NO...

Abstract Soil carbon pool, the largest carbon pool in any terrestrial ecosystems, has been disrupted owing to high rates of fertilization and intensive crop rotation. Reduction of soil carbon caused decreases of tobacco quality. Firstly, the correlations between soil types (purple soil and paddy soil from the tobacco region in southern China) and tobacco aroma compounds were analyzed in this research. It was showed that the soil carbon pool is closely correlated with tobacco aroma. Secondly, eff...

Abstract Co-cultivation of viable cells of the human pathogenic bacterium Pseudomonas aeruginosa with the endophytic fungus Fusarium tricinctum induced silent bacterial biosynthetic gene clusters. Visual and chemical inspection of the co-cultures by comparison with the axenic cultures showed a clear reaction of P. aeruginosa towards its fungal competitor which was reflected by the deep greenish coloration of the co-cultures. Inspection of the HPLC chromatograms of the co-cultures revealed the in...

Abstract Four new β-carboline alkaloids, siliendines A–D (1‒4), and four known metabolites (5–8) were isolated from the ethanolic extract of the aerial parts of Silene seoulensis using various chromatographic methods. The structures of the new compounds were established using multiple spectroscopic approaches, with techniques such as HRESIMS and NMR, which included HSQC and HMBC. The known compounds were identified by comparing their spectra with those of the reported compounds.

Abstract The Manobo tribe in the Philippines is culturally rich in ethnomedicinal practices and known to use popular plants locally named as “Lunas” (meaning “cure”). One of these is “Lunas-bagon tapol” which was previously identified as Lunasia sp. (Rutaceae) based on vegetative morphology. The other species is “Lunas-buyo” which is similar in ethnomedicinal use and morphology. This broadly-based study verifies these two “Lunas”-named specimens and evaluates the phytochemicals present and cytot...

Abstract Six new compounds including two azaphilones, lunatoic acids D–E (1, 2), three isocoumarins, lunatinins B–D (3-5), and one α-pyrone derivative, lunatinin E (6), as well as four known ones, lunatoic acid A (7), lunatinin (8), penicipyran D (9) and chaetoquadrin F (10) were isolated from the rice medium of the gut fungus Paraphaeosphaeria sp. XZD2-1. Their planar structures were elucidated by analysis of 1D and 2D NMR as well as HRESIMS spectroscopic data. The absolute configurations of co...

Abstract Angelica dahurica is an important medicinal plant, which has been widely used in medicines and skin-whitening products. In the investigation of phytochemicals present in A. dahurica roots, three unusual furanocoumarin rhamnosides, angelicosides I–III (1–3), one undescribed furanocoumarin glucoside, angelicoside IV (4), together with eight known compounds (5–12) were isolated. Their structures were characterized by a combination of UV, IR, NMR, HRESIMS, along with acid hydrolysis and enz...

Abstract Two new norbergenin derivatives, 4-O-p-hydroxybenzoylnorbergenin (1) and 11-O-(E)-cinnamoylnorbergenin (2), were isolated from the leaves of Diospyros gilletii De Wild along with nine known compounds, including norbergenin (3), 4-O-galloylnorbergenin (4), betulin (5), betulinic acid (6), lupeol (7), ursolic acid (8), corosolic acid (9), β-sitosterol (10) and quercitol (11). Their structures were elucidated from the analysis of their 1D and 2D 1H and 13C NMR spectral data in conjunction ...

Abstract Three new pregnane glycosides in addition to four known compounds were isolated from the methylene chloride fraction of Caralluma hexagona Lavranos using bioassay-guided fractionation. The new compounds were identified as 12,20-di-O-benzoyl-3β,8β,12β,14β,20-pentahydroxy-(20R)-pregn-5-ene-3-O-β- d -glucopyranosyl-(1→4)-β- d -digitaloside (1), 3β,8β,14β,20-tetrahydroxy (20R)-pregn-5-ene-3-O-β- d -glucopyranosyl-(1→4)-O-β- d -digitaloside-20-O-β– d -glucopyranoside (2), 3β,8β,14β,20-tetrah...

Abstract Chemical investigation on the peels of the cultivated edible mushroom Wolfiporia cocos led to the identification of 13 diterpenes and 4 steroids, including two new abietane diterpenes (1 and 2) and one new pregnane steroid (14). Structures of new compounds were determined by analysis of NMR, MS, and electronic circular dichroism (ECD) data. All compounds were evaluated for cytotoxicity (K562 and HepG2), antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory activity. Compounds 15, 17 showed strong cytotox...
