Abstract Accurate prediction of the resistance of packed beds with cylindrical particles is critical for industrial applications. In this work, a series of experiments were performed to explore the effect of the morphology of cylinder on the pressure drop of airflow through packed beds. We used machined stainless-steel cylindrical particles with diameters of 3, 4, and 6 mm and an aspect ratio H/D = 1–10 to conduct the resistance experiment. The novelty was to propose an Ergun constant of porosit...

Abstract Fluidised bed technology is a very common industrial process and has a wide range of applications in process engineering. Though indirectly, a common way to infer the end product uniformity is through investigating the solid residence time distribution (RTD) in the system. A good understanding of the particle RTD is crucial for the proper design, optimisation, and scale-up of a fluidisation process. Flexible ribbon particles have a very different flow behaviour in a fluidised bed compar...

Abstract Non-Newtonian fluid flows through packed beds are common in many industries. Our understanding of this flow system is very limited, and the correlations for describing the fluid-particle interaction are not fully established. To overcome these problems, this paper presents a comprehensive study of this system on a sub-particle scale, with a special reference to the interaction between fluid rheology and bed properties. This is done by conducting about five hundred Lattice Boltzmann simu...

Abstract Folic acid is a synthetic vitamin (vitamin B9) commonly used for food fortification. However, its vulnerability to processing and storage implies loss of efficiency. The objective of this work was to study folic acid controlled delivery systems produced by a spray-drying process. Microparticles of folic acid, using different biopolymers as encapsulating agents, were prepared. These folic acid microparticles were then evaluated for their drug entrapment efficiency and in vitro release pr...

Abstract The full-loop gas-solid hydrodynamics in a pilot-scale circulating fluidized bed (CFB) is numerically investigated by using multi-phase particle-in-cell (MP-PIC) method. In this method, fluid motion is resolved under Eulerian framework while particle motion is tackled under Lagrangian framework. The numerical results agree well with experimental data, demonstrating the reasonability of the MP-PIC method in simulating dense fluid-particle systems. The main features of gas-solid flows in ...

Abstract The electrostatic charge in a fluidized bed can be applied to provide local information on the bed hydrodynamics. Electrostatic probes can withstand adverse conditions that would be an issue for other measurement probes, such as high temperatures (limited by metal), high velocities (e.g. 2 m/s), high bed densities (1500 kg/m3), and large-scale equipment. The objective of this study was to investigate various applications of electrostatic probes in fluidized beds. Results obtained with a...

Abstract Calcium carbonate (CaCO3) microparticles with controlled size and morphology were prepared by carbonization method in a closed reactor under high pressure and supercritical conditions. The saturated calcium hydroxide solution (Ca(OH)2) and CO2 were used as the reactants, and ethanolamine was used as the chemical additive. The optimal reaction conditions including the concentration of ethanolamine, temperature, time and pressure were investigated. The morphology and polymorphism of CaCO3...

Abstract In this work, W-Cr-Zr as a self-passivating tungsten alloy is studied. Spark plasma sintering (SPS) is used to prepare the sample. The influence of the heating rate on the densification process and microstructure evolution during SPS was investigated. The increasing the heating rate enhance the homogeneity of the microstructure, however, did not show great effect on overall the sample density. High heating rate with high thermal inertia led the actual temperature to approach or even exc...
