The development of 1.46 THz and 1.9 THz local oscillators for the GUSTO project are described. Initial off-the-shelf prototypes have generated more that the 15 uW required by the HEB mixer elements, while requiring sufficiently low DC power. Compact source elements that can be arrayed in a 15 mm 2xN spacing have been designed.

The design of a single-sideband 675–693 GHz integrated polarimeter is presented here. The compact module, measuring 1.5” x 1.5” x 0.75” includes the OMT, RF LNAs, image-reject filters, mixers, IF LNAs, and LO active multiplier chain. Total power dissipation is expected to be approximately 6W. Receiver noise temperature is expected to be approximately 6000K SSB. The polarimeter has been machined and assembled with measurements to be presented at the conference.

Solid-state sources using diode based frequency multipliers are critical for radio astronomy and atmospheric studies, as well as many other important scientific applications. This talk describes many of the technological innovations that are now used to achieve these goals and two specific recent examples that demonstrate the current capability of this technology. Solid-state sources and receivers are now available throughout the frequency range from 100 GHz to 3 THz. Although III-V MMIC amplifiers and Si-Ge technology are beginning to extend throughout this band, systems based on GaAs Schottky diodes still offer the best performance for most applications. Many scientific applications require greater power from solid-state sources than has previously been available. This paper describes the design and flight model measurements of a 874-GHz Schottky receiver for ice cloud characterization that uses high-efficiency amplifiers and varactor multipliers in the LO chain to achieve low DC power with uncompromised sensitivity in a compact configuration optimal for CubeSat platforms. This paper describes the design and performance of compact integrated sub-millimeter wave heterodyne receivers for CubeSat platforms. Examples are given of receivers produced for 183 GHz and 874 GHz atmospheric science applications. It is described how these receivers further enable more sophisticated architectures for sub-millimeter nanosatellite receivers, including polarimeters and correlation radiometers.
