Abstract Two studies were conducted to evaluate the effect of phytase supplementation on the overall performance and nutrient retention efficiency of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) fed low-phosphorus (P) plant-based diets at water temperatures of 11 °C and 15 °C. In the first experiment at 11 °C, trout (average weight 56g) were allocated to one of 4 dietary treatments, with 3 replicate 200L tanks per diet and 35 fish per tank. In the second experiment (15 °C), trout (average weight 42g) wer...

Abstract An experiment was designed to determine the influence of fibre and betaine on the development of the intestine, liver and pancreas of broilers from hatch to 14 d of age. A total of 250-day-old Cobb 500 male broilers were allocated to 16 cages with 15 broilers each. Treatments were arranged in a 2 × 4 factorial design, consisting of 2 feed formulations (low and high fibre diets) and 4 levels of betaine (0, 1, 3 or 5 kg/t). At hatch, 10 birds in total were euthanised, and samples of the l...

ABSTRACT This study aimed to investigate the effect of phytase and dietary Ca level on performance, phytate (inositol hexa-phosphate, IP6) concentration, and anti-oxidant enzyme activity in broilers exposed to cycling high environmental temperatures. A total of 2,970 day-old Cobb 400 male broilers were randomly allocated among 6 treatments, with 15 replicate pens, and 33 birds per pen. Corn-soy diets low in available phosphorus (avP, 0.15% matrix applied) were fed in 2 phases; starter (0 to 21 d...

Abstract Omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3 PUFA) are linked to a variety of health benefits against human disorders and disease. However, the typical western diet is generally low in n-3 PUFA and high in n-6 PUFA, suggesting that the recommended intake of these essential fatty acids is seldom achieved. Therefore, dietary enrichment of animal meat and eggs with n-3 PUFA could help increase consumption of these fatty acids. Fish oils and microalgae (MA) are rich sources of long chain n-3 PU...

Abstract Supplemental betaine has been reported to have osmoprotectant properties, thereby supporting intestinal integrity and health, which could benefit young birds during early gut development. Therefore, an experiment was designed to determine the influence of dietary fibre and supplemental betaine on mucus production as well as blood and digesta osmolality of broiler chicks from hatch to 14 days of age. A total of 250 day-old Cobb 500 male broiler chicks were allocated to 16 cages with 15 b...

1. The current study was conducted to evaluate the influence of high phytase doses and xylanase, individually and in combination, on performance, blood inositol and real time gastric pH in broilers fed wheat-based diets. 2. In a 42 d experiment, a total of 576 male Ross 308 broiler chicks were allocated to four dietary treatments. Treatments consisted of a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement, with 500 or 2500 FTU/kg phytase and 0 or 16000 BXU/kg xylanase, fed in two phases (starter 0–21; grower 21–42 d)...

ABSTRACT A meta-analysis was conducted to investigate the effect of mono-component proteases on performance and apparent ileal amino acid digestibility (AIAAD, %) in monogastrics. A total of 67 experimental trials were included in the meta-analysis from published and internal reports, contributing 467 lines of data. Poultry and swine data accounted for 81 and 19% of the dataset, respectively. Forty-four different proteases were included in the meta-analysis, accounting for commercial and non-com...

Abstract The objective of this study was to investigate how xylanase-induced changes in soluble sugar, short chain fatty acid (SCFA) and microbial content of the gut might be linked to broiler performance. A 42-day experiment was conducted using 328 male Ross 508 broiler chicks divided into two treatment groups, fed wheat-based diets with or without xylanase (0 or 16,000 BXU/kg). Each group had 8 replicate pens (13 birds per pen), with 3 additional replicate sampling pens per treatment (20 chick...

Abstract A total of 2,376 one-day-old Ross broiler chickens were used to investigate the effect of myo-inositol (MYO) and phytase supplementation on performance and bone mineralization variables in broilers fed diets formulated to have varying concentrations of available phosphorus (P). The trial was designed as a 2 × 2 × 3 factorial; with and without phytase superdosing (0 or 1,500 FTU/kg), MYO (0 or 3 g/kg), and dietary P (low, moderate or high). At 21 d, dietary phytase and MYO had no consist...
