The role of MgH2 in the process of filiform-like corrosion on Mg alloys has been investigated. MgH2 was grown galvanostatically on the Mg ZEK100 alloy at a current density of -5 mA/cm2 for various times in 0.1 M NaOH and the subsequent electrochemical and corrosion behaviour compared to that of as-polished specimens. The electrochemical behaviour of two Al-Mn materials (Al- 5.5 at % Mn and Al- 13.5 at % Mn) has been studied in 0.275 M NaCl and 0.138 M MgCl2 solutions to simulate the cathodic environment of Al-Mn particles during the corrosion of a Mg alloy.
