Background The imbalance between the generation of free radicals and natural cellular antioxidant defenses, known as oxidative stress, can cause oxidation of biomolecules and further contribute to aging-associated diseases. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the antioxidant capacities of Thai traditional tonifying preparation, Jatu-Phala-Tiga (JPT) and its herbal ingredients consisting of Phyllanthus emblica, Terminalia arjuna, Terminalia chebula, and Terminalia bellirica and further asse...

Abstract The antidiabetic, antioxidant and antimicrobial activities of solvent fractions from the aerial part of T. triandra were investigated. The n-hexane (TT-001), ethyl acetate fraction of the leaves (TT-002), n-hexane (TT-003) and the ethyl acetate fraction of the twigs (TT-004) were studied. All the fractions displayed potent antidiabetic activity with TT-003 displaying the best activity (IC50 of 93.74 and 3.40 μg/mL for α-amylase and α-glucosidase, respectively). However, TT-004 displayed...

The root bark of Lycium chinense (LC) has been reported to have potent antioxidant and antidiabetic properties. In the present study, we investigated the attenuative effect of LC against diabetes induced sexual dysfunction and testicular damages in animal models. Diabetic animals were treated with LC (100 and 400 mg/kg) once daily for 6 weeks. At the end of the treatment, mating behavior tests were performed and the animals were sacrificed for the determination of hormonal profile, oxidative str...

N6-(2-hydroxyethyl)-adenosine (HEA), is one of the active molecule found in Cordyceps cicadae. The protective effect of HEA against H2O2 induced oxidative damage in PC12 cells and the mechanism of action was investigated. The cells were exposed to varying concentrations of HEA (5–40 μM) for a period of 24 h and further incubated with 100 μM of H2O2 for an another 12 h. Cell viability, LDH release, MMP collapse, Ca2+ overload, antioxidant parameters (reactive oxygen species generation (ROS), malo...

Abstract Phytochemical investigation of the underground part of the blossoming tropical orchid Arundina graminifolia led to the isolation of six new glucosyloxybenzyl 2 R -benzylmalate derivatives named arundinosides L-Q ( 1 – 6 ) together with 5 known compounds arundinosides D-F, J and K ( 7 – 11 ). The structures of the isolated compounds were determined by extensive spectroscopic data analysis. The anti-α-glucosidase and antioxidant activities of the isolated compounds were determined. The re...

Abstract The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of the butanol fraction from Allium tuberosum (BFAT) in high fat diet/streptozotocin (HFD/STZ) induced diabetic nephropathy. Wistar rats were fed with HFD for 4 weeks and thereafter administered with 35 mg/kg STZ intraperitoneally. Diabetic rats were treated with BFAT (100 or 400 mg/kg) and metformin (150 mg/kg) for 40 days. After treatment, the blood, urine and kidney tissues were obtained for biochemical and histological analysis....

Abstract The genus Cordyceps has about 750 identified species which are distributed in many regions of the World, but mainly found in South Asia, Europe and North America. The species of the genus are highly priced and are widely used as food and medicine for the treatment of various ailments. This present review compiles literature information on the ethno-medicinal, phytochemistry and pharmacological properties of species in the genus Cordycep s. In addition, the review also suggest recommenda...
