We used multiple approaches to analyze photosynthetic picoplankton (PPP) structure and production in a wetland in the Lower Parana Basin (Argentina). A seasonal field survey was combined with an experimental study to analyze PPP variability under different light conditions. The epilithic biomass of an outflow stream at Potter Peninsula (King George Island, Antarctica) was studied from November 1996 to February 1997 by means of chlorophyll a concentration, dry weight and ash-free dry weight. The taxonomic composition and ecology of microbial mats were investigated in 26 lentic environments of Potter Peninsula (King George Island, Antarctica) during the summer of 1995/96.
