During the fabrication of mixed uranium-plutonium oxide (MOX) fuel rods, two important characteristics to be checked in as-fabricated fuel pins are plutonium enrichment and plutonium dioxide agglomerates. A simple method for evaluation of total unsharpness of radiographs using wires of different diameters and plaque type penetrameters instead of knife edge method has been suggested. The theoretical basis of the method and experimental details are explained in this paper.
The end cap welds on fuel pins of fast reactors are currently being tested by X-ray radiography. An alternative, cost effective immersion ultrasonic technique has been developed for testing these end cap welds. The technique uses a highly damped point focused probe, positioned precisely, to generate a 45° shear wave in the tube that is intercepted by any discontinuity at the weld join.
