We evaluated the association between etiology of maternal anemia and iron status throughout infancy. Samples from a study designed to examine Praziquantel treatment during pregnancy were used (n = 359). All women were infected with schistosomiasis and randomized to Praziquantel or placebo at 16 ± 2 weeks’ gestation. Hemoglobin, serum ferritin (SF), soluble transferrin receptor (sTfR), hepcidin, C-reactive protein, and interleukin-6 were measured in maternal and infant blood. The relationship bet...

Abstract Background We evaluated whether maternally-derived antibodies to a malarial vaccine candidate, Plasmodium falciparum Schizont Egress Antigen-1 ( Pf SEA-1), in cord blood interfered with the development of infant anti- Pf SEA-1 antibodies in response to natural exposure. Methods We followed 630 Tanzanian infants who were measured their antibodies against Pf SEA-1 (aa 810-1023; Pf SEA-1A) at birth and 6, 12, 18, and 24 months of age, and examined the changes in anti- Pf SEA-1A antibody le...

Abstract Objectives It is unclear whether blood lead level (BLL) is associated with osteoarthritis (OA). The objectives of this study were to address the relationship between BLL and OA and to assess whether degree of obesity, evaluated as body mass index (BMI), mediates BLL-related OA. Study design This study was performed using data obtained from 884 postmenopausal women (≥55 years old) in the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2010-2012. OA in back, hip, and knee was asses...

Background The objectives of this study were to 1) evaluate the influence of treatment with praziquantel on the inflammatory milieu in maternal, placental, and cord blood, 2) assess the extent to which proinflammatory signatures in placental and cord blood impacts birth outcomes, and 3) evaluate the impact of other helminths on the inflammatory micro environment. Methods/Findings This was a secondary analysis of samples from 369 mother-infant pairs participating in a randomized controlled trial ...

Abstract Objective: The relationship between breastfeeding and maternal depression in later life has not yet been investigated. We examined whether the number of breastfed infants or the period of breastfeeding influenced maternal depression in postmenopausal women. Methods: We analyzed 1,372 parous postmenopausal women aged ≥ 50 years who had participated in the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2014. Depression was diagnosed using the Patient Health Questionnaire 9, with s...

Background Hyperendemic circulation of all four types of dengue virus (DENV-1-4) has expanded globally, fueling concern for increased incidence of severe dengue. While the majority of DENV infections are subclinical, epidemiologic studies suggest that type-cross-reactive immunity can influence disease outcome in subsequent infections. The mechanisms controlling these differential clinical outcomes remain poorly defined. Methodology/Principal findings Blood samples were collected from a cohort of...

An adequate threshold for the Clinical Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) Questionnaire (CCQ) defining more symptomatic COPD patients has not been determined. We aimed to determine the efficacy of the CCQ and the appropriate CCQ threshold for more symptomatic COPD patients. COPD patients aged > 40 years who smoked/had smoked ≥10 packs/year were prospectively enrolled over 1 year from three South Korean hospitals (n = 126). Correlations between the CCQ and St. George’s Respiratory Quest...
