Summary Acute stroke management has been revolutionised by evidence of the effectiveness of thrombectomy. Because time is brain in stroke care, the speed with which a patient with large vessel occlusion is transferred to a thrombectomy-capable centre determines outcome. Therefore, each link in the stroke rescue chain, starting with symptom onset and ending with recanalisation, should be streamlined. However, in contrast to inhospital delays, prehospital delays are unchanged despite substantial e...

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the leading cause of dementia with very limited therapeutic options. Amyloid β (Aβ) and phosphorylated Tau (p-Tau) are key pathogenic molecules in AD. P38α-MAPK is specifically activated in AD lesion sites. However, its effects on AD pathogenesis, especially on p-Tau-associated brain pathology, and the underlying molecular mechanisms remain unclear. We mated human APP-transgenic mice and human P301S Tau-transgenic mice with mapk14-floxed and neuron-specific Cre-knock-...

INTRODUCTION: To assess the value of optic nerve sheath diameter (ONSD) measurements at different time points to predict the malignant evolution in middle cerebral artery (MCA) infarction and to investigate the relationship between ONSD and infarct volume on follow-up computed tomography (CT). METHODS: In a single-center prospective observational study, we recruited patients with MCA infarction and age- and sex-matched controls. Clinical characteristics including NationaI Institutes of Health St...

The development of anti-N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor encephalitis is often associated with neoplasia or infectious diseases as antibodies against neurons or synaptic proteins surface. A 30-year-old male patient was admitted to our department because of neurocognitive symptoms, particularly memory difficulties which had appeared a year prior and since then had been increasing. He had a medical history of smoking and hypertension. On examination, there were no focal neurological deficits. ...
Abstract Transorbital sonography provides reliable information about the estimation of intra-cranial pressure by measuring the optic nerve sheath diameter (ONSD), whereas the optic nerve (ON) diameter (OND) may reveal ON atrophy in patients with multiple sclerosis. Here, an AUTomatic Optic Nerve MeAsurement (AUTONoMA) system for OND and ONSD assessment in ultrasound B-mode images based on deformable models is presented. The automated measurements were compared with manual ones obtained by two op...

Abstract It is unclear whether alterations in cerebral pH underlie Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and other dementias. We performed proton spectroscopy after oral administration of histidine in healthy young and elderly persons and in patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and dementia (total N=147). We measured cerebral tissue pH and ratios of common brain metabolites in relation to phosphocreatine and creatine (Cr) in spectra acquired from the hippocampus, the white matter of the centrum semi...

Abstract Objective The clinical diagnosis of corticobasal syndrome (CBS) represents a challenge for physicians and reliable diagnostic imaging biomarkers would support the diagnostic work-up. We aimed to investigate the neural signatures of CBS using multimodal T1-weighted and resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Methods Nineteen patients with CBS (age 67.0±6.0 years; mean±SD) and 19 matched controls (66.5±6.0) were enrolled from the German Frontotemporal Lobar Degeneration...

Background Estimation of intracranial pressure (ICP) may be helpful in the management of neurological critically ill patients. It has been shown that ultrasonography of the optic nerve sheath diameter (ONSD) is a reliable tool for non-invasive estimation of increased intracranial pressure (ICP) at hospital admission or in intensive care. Less is known about the estimation of increased ICP and usefulness of ONSD in the prehospital setting. The aim of this review was to elucidate both prevailing a...
