Little is known about the long-term effect of breastfeeding on dietary habits. We examined the association between breastfeeding duration and adherence to current dietary patterns of young women. This was a cross-sectional analysis of 587 healthy women aged /=12 months (reference)] were recalled. Diet was assessed using a food frequency questionnaire and patterns were identified using factor analysis by principal component. Adherence to patterns was categorized in tertiles; the first (T1 = refer...

We investigated if breastfeeding duration and current dietary patterns (DP) were associated with glucose and lipid metabolism biomarkers in women from the Nutritionist’s Health Study. This is a cross-sectional analysis of 200 healthy undergraduates and nutrition graduates aged ≤45 years. Total [<6; ≥6 months] and predominant [<3; ≥3 months] breastfeeding were recalled using questionnaires. Diet were assessed using a food frequency questionnaire. DP obtained by factor analysis by principal compon...

Abstract Introduction It is unclear how aging and menopause-induced lipid changes contribute to the elevated cardiovascular risk in menopausal women. We examined the association between lipid profiles and menopausal status and duration of menopause in the Longitudinal Study of Adult Health (ELSA-Brasil). Methods This is a cross-sectional analysis of baseline data from women in the ELSA-Brasil, stratified by duration of menopause into 5 groups: pre-menopause, Results From 1,916 women, postmenopau...

Abstract Background Chronic renal failure is a debilitating and expensive complication of diabetes mellitus (DM). It is controversial if kidney disease may occur in prediabetes stages. We systematically reviewed the prevalence of diabetic kidney disease (DKD) as defined by albuminuria or reduced glomerular filtration rate (GFR) in prediabetes. Methods We searched for studies reporting the frequency of DKD in prediabetes (impaired plasma glucose, impaired glucose tolerance and glycated hemoglobin...

Abstract Introduction Insulin resistance and low-grade inflammation are pathophysiological mechanisms shared by type 2 diabetes and dementia. A cluster of biomarkers that could help diagnosing cognitive dysfunction prior to the installation of insulin resistance is desirable. This ELSA sub-study examined whether a cluster of selected inflammatory biomarkers was associated with worse cognitive scores in non-diabetic participants. Methods A sample of 998 non-diabetic participants of ELSA-Brasil ha...

Background Neck circumference (NC) is associated with traditional cardiovascular risk factors (CVRF), but its usefulness to identify earlier atherogenic risk has been scarcely examined. Associations of NC with non-traditional CVRF were investigated in participants at low-to-moderate risk from the Brazilian Longitudinal Study of Adult Health (ELSA-Brasil).
