Abstract Sulfur isotopic composition is useful for tracing sources of ore-forming materials. In situ sulfur isotope analysis by laser ablation coupled with multi-collector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-MC-ICPMS) has an advantage over traditional bulk analysis in tracing sources of sulfur in an ore deposit that has complex mineral types and multiple ore-forming processes. However, in using this method, matrix effects exist widely for sulfides from ore deposits. In this work, ma...

Abstract Herein, we describe the use of a Nu Plasma 1700 multi-collector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer (MC-ICP-MS) in true high-resolution mode to determine Fe isotopic ratios at the center of Fe peaks instead of their shoulders. A standard-sample bracketing (SSB) technique and a Ni doping method were used for instrumental mass bias calibration. The effects of Fe/Ni ratio and plasma mode were investigated in order to establish a high-precision Fe isotope analysis method. The resul...

We prepared a series of pressed powder tablets and chalcopyrite glass standards to correct mass bias when using standard–sample bracketing for in situ sulfur isotope measurements. A femtosecond laser ablation coupled multi-collector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (fsLA-MC-ICP-MS) method was used to determine the sulfur isotope composition of these standards. Chalcopyrite glass (YN411-m) was prepared by quickly quenching the fused chalcopyrite, which was melted at 1000 °C under a pr...

Abstract Because Pb isotopes can be used for tracing, they are widely used in many disciplines. The detection and analysis of Pb isotopes of bulk samples are usually conducted using thermal ionization mass spectrometer (TIMS) and multiple-collector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer (MC-ICP-MS), both of which need external reference materials with known isotopic compositions to correct for the mass discrimination effect produced during analysis. NIST NBS 981 is the most widely used ref...
