Endophytic bacteria (EB) are both a novel source of bioactive compounds that confer phytopathogen resistance and inducers of secondary metabolites in host plants. Twenty-seven EB isolated from various parts of Metasequoia glyptostroboides, Ginkgo biloba, Taxus brevifolia, Pinus densiflora, Salix babylonica, and S. chaenomeloides could produce salicylic acid (SA). The highest producers were isolates EB-44 and EB-47, identified as Pseudomonas tremae and Curtobacterium herbarum, respectively. Nicot...

The Clp protease complex, which is the central protein degradation machinery in plastids, plays a role similar to proteasome. ClpC1 and ClpC2 comprise the chaperonic part of the Clp protease and share more than 90% nucleotide sequence similarity with each other. In a previous study, the co-suppression of Nicotiana benthamiana ClpC1 and ClpC2 (NbClpC1/C2) resulted in leaf chlorosis, growth retardation phenotype, disappearance of apical dominance and coarsely packed mesophyll cells. Quantitative r...

Allium ochotense and Allium microdictyon are commonly known as ‘Mountain garlic’ and are popular, economically important species in many countries such as Korea, China, and Mongolia. Their leaves are used as culinary side dishes and in traditional medicines. In Korea, these two species are at risk of extinction due to damage to their natural habitat and thus, conservation and breeding programs are needed. However, their identification relies mostly on morphological data, which is limited and unt...

Cyclodipeptides (CDP) represent a diverse family of small, highly stable, cyclic peptides that are produced as secondary functional metabolites or side products of protein metabolism by bacteria, fungi, and animals. They are widespread in nature, and exhibit a broad variety of biological and pharmacological activities. CDP synthases (CDPSs) and non-ribosomal peptide synthetases (NRPSs) catalyze the biosynthesis of the CDP core structure, which is further modified by tailoring enzymes often assoc...

Paclitaxel (taxol) has long been used as a potent anticancer agent for the treatment of many cancers. Ever since the fungal species Taxomyces andreanae was first shown to produce taxol in 1993, many endophytic fungal species have been recognized as taxol accumulators. In this study, we analyzed the taxol-producing capacity of different Colletotrichum spp. to determine the distribution of a taxol biosynthetic gene within this genus. Distribution of the taxadiene synthase (TS) gene, which cyclizes...

In this study, the accumulation of stilbene compounds and the expression of genes related to their syntheses in ‘Campbell Early’ and ‘Kyoho’ grapes (Vitis sp.) were investigated by irradiating the harvested berries with four different light sources (white fluorescent and purple, blue, and red LED lights) for 48 hours. The total concentrations of five stilbene derivatives at 24 hours after irradiation differed in response to different light sources and cultivars. The accumulation of stilbenic com...

Abstract The effects of 2-alkyl derivatives of 2-cyclopropene-1-carboxylic acid ethyl ester (CPE) with various lengths of alkyl side chains were examined on ethylene production and flesh softening of ‘Taishuu’ and ‘Fuyu’ persimmon ( Diospyros kaki L.) fruit. When the ‘Taishuu’ fruit were treated with gaseous forms of the CPEs with short alkyl chains, the increased ethylene production and decreased flesh firmness of fruit were not inhibited. However, ripening parameters were inhibited by the CPEs...

The skin blackening of Fuyu persimmon (Diospyros kaki cv. ‘Fuyu’) fruit significantly affects its postharvest quality. In this study, the pigment that causes this skin blackening was characterized, and its origin was identified. The pigment was mainly deposited either on the cell wall or in the intercellular spaces of cells around the sclerenchymal cells in skin tissue. A visible light absorption test showed the pigment to be similar to melanin. Washing of the blackened skin tissue with varied s...
