Exotic psittacine birds have been implicated as reservoir of diarrheagenic Escherichia coli (E. coli), including enteropathogenic E. coli (EPEC) and Shiga-toxin producing E. coli (STEC). Here, we present a genotypic and phenotypic characterization of typical EPEC/STEC hybrid strains isolated from exotic psittacine birds. The strains were positive for eae, bfpA, and stx2f genes, belonged to serotype O137:H6 and ST2678. Two strains were subject to whole genome sequencing, confirming the presence o...

Abstract We surveyed healthy captive cockatiels (Nymphicus hollandicus) for Escherichia coli and Salmonella spp. Cloacal swabs were collected from 94 cockatiels kept in commercial breeders, private residencies and pet shops in the cities of Sao Paulo/SP and Niteroi/RJ (Brazil). Three strains of E. coli from each individual were tested for the presence of ExPEC-, APEC- and DEC-related genes. We evaluated the blaTEM, blaSHV, blaOXA, blaCMY, blaCTX-M, tetA, tetB, aadA, aphA, strAB, sul1, sul2, sul3...

Abstract The emergence and dissemination of carbapenem-resistant hypervirulent Klebsiella pneumoniae (CR-hvKp) is a worrisome public health issue compromising the treatment and outcome of infections caused by this pathogen. We performed a detailed virulome and resistome analysis of representative KPC- and/or CTX-M-producing K. pneumoniae belonging to clonal group (CG) 258 (sequence types ST11, ST258, ST340, ST437), circulating in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia and Peru; with further evaluati...

The C. yacare placed in breeding conditions have a preserved genetic pool, which requires the enhancement of its zootechnical characteristics to solve some obstacles. Among them is the natural occurrence of Salmonella spp. in wild C. yacare. To address this problem, some breeders have adopted the use of probiotics to reduce Salmonella spp. in the digestive tube of crocodilians. The purpose of this study was to verify whether the addition of probiotics in animal feed reduces the isolation frequen...

AbstractBackground: Edwardsiella tarda infections are frequent causes of severe outbreaks in the fish farming industry besides representing possible zoonotic risks. However, naturally occurring outbreaks that affect various species besides fishes are seldom described.Aim: To report an outbreak of acute mortality caused by E. tarda affecting multiple species that inhabited a natural pond in the state of Sao Paulo, Brazil.Materials and methods: Three adult tilapias, three Mallard ducks and one Sno...

Background: Urinary tract infections (UTI) cause severe losses to the swine industry worldwide and uropathogenic Escherichia coli (UPEC) are the main agent isolated from UTI in sows. Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the virulence genes, assess the phylogenetic background, clonal diversity, and the pattern of resistance to antimicrobials in 186 isolates of UPEC isolated from sows in Brazil. Materials and methods: Urine samples from 300 sows of three herds with clinical signs fr...

Abstract The presence of free-ranging urban birds is a risk factor for transmitting pathogens to captive animals and humans alike, including Salmonella spp. and diarrheagenic Escherichia coli. Cloacal swabs from 156 synanthropic Great egrets (Ardea alba) and feral pigeons (Columba livia domestica) that inhabit the surroundings of an urban zoo were processed for the identification of Salmonella spp. and diarrheagenic E. coli pathotypes. Bacterial species identification and genotypic characterizat...
