Abstract Alterations in the permafrost due to a warming climate increases the risk of permafrost thawing, accelerates carbon release, lowers super-permafrost groundwater, strengthens desertification, and destroys infrastructure. Abstract Permafrost accounts for about 52% of the total area of the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau, and the permafrost area is about 140 × 10 4 km 2 . The mean annual ground temperature of permafrost ranges from −0.1 to −5 °C, and lower than −5 °C at extreme high-mountains.
