Abstract. Controlled drainage combined with winter crops was investigated for the first time as a mitigation measure for reducing nitrate loss through drainage systems during a three-year period (2012–15) on a loamy soil in Denmark. The impact of controlled drainage on groundwater levels, drain flow, total nitrogen, nitrate, ammonium, nitrous oxide, total phosphorous, and phosphate when applying regulation levels of 50 and 70 cm above drain pipes were determined by using a before-after control-i...

Abstract Re-establishment of riparian freshwater wetlands often involves re-meandering of former channelized river sections by narrowing the channel width and depth, which creates frequently inundated floodplains. Inundations are important for floodplains in terms of erosion/accretion of sediment and for deposition of nutrients and organic matter. The links between floodplain hydraulics and deposition of sediment, organic matter and phosphorus were investigated along a 6 km re-meandered channel ...

We validated an existing physically based 3D MIKE SHE groundwater resource model (DK-model) at 175 Danish gauging stations covering different catchment sizes in order to calculate monthly water runoff in the 50% ungauged part of Denmark. Model performance was in most cases good (61% of gauging stations had a Nash–Sutcliffe (NS) coefficient >0.60) but nevertheless showed a large seasonal and georegion specific bias. Therefore, bias correction factors had to be developed before applying the DK-mod...

Nationwide monitoring of the aquatic environment was initiated in 1988 in Denmark as a means to follow the outcome of the Action Plans for nutrient pollution of the aquatic environment. Five Action Plans have been adopted by the Danish Parliament since 1985 and the nationwide monitoring programme can be used to quantify the outcome as shown by reductions in nutrient discharges from both point and non-point sources. Moreover, the empirical experience gathered from nearly 20 years of monitoring is...
Water exchange, flow patterns and deposition of sediment and phosphorus were measured in cross-sections of a naturally functioning floodplain during one winter and in three restored floodplains following remeandering of formerly straightened and channelized rivers. Sediment and phosphorus depositional processes were studied, deploying artificial grass mats at different distances from the river channel. In addition, a mass-balance approach was applied on the experimental site. Our results show th...
