To solve the problems of decreasing water resources from the Yellow River, the renovation project of water-saving and controlling water distribution was implemented in the Hetao Irrigation District of North China since 1999. The local hydrological cycle is expected to be influenced or changed during the past fifteen years through the project. Jiefangzha Irrigation Region, the second large partition of the Hetao Irrigation District, was selected as the typical area to explore the relationship bet...

Abstract Evapotranspiration ( ET ) scale effect influences the understanding of water and energy balance processes at different scales. However, there are fewer studies about the relationships between multi-scale ET and the controlling meteorological factors. In this study, the variations in leaf and plant transpiration and farmland ET of summer maize were systematically analyzed using three-successive-year data from an irrigation experiment station in north China, and the meteorological factors...

The main objectives of this study were to assess and partition soybean evapotranspiration and modelling to predict yields. The SIMDualKc water balance model, that adopts the dual crop coefficient approach, was used to evaluate the transpiration and soil evaporation components. Transpiration estimates were then used with the Stewart's water-yield model to predict soybean yields. SIMDualKc was calibrated and validated using soil water observations relative to four crop seasons and six treatments. ...

Four years of soybean experimental data observed at Daxing, North China Plain, were used to assess the ability of the AquaCrop model to predict soybean final biomass and yield. The model was parameterized and calibrated using field data on leaf area index (LAI), available soil water, soil evaporation, biomass and final yield data. The model was assessed using calibrated and default parameters. Data on LAI were used to derive the fraction of ground cover and to calibrate the green canopy cover (C...

Evapotranspiration (ETc) is an important quantity for hydrological cycle. This study shows evapotranspiration, the ratio of evaporation to evapotranspiration (E/ETc) of winter wheat and maize in north China. Several relationships, namely, E/ET0 and soil surface moisture, E/ET0 and leaf area index (LAI), are also analyzed. The average seasonal ETc values for winter wheat, maize (2008) and maize (2009) are 431.21, 456.3 and 341.4mm. The value of E/ET0 varied from 1 at initial growth stage to 0.295...

Transpiration and photosynthesis are two closely related and intercoupled processes that dominate the physiological activities and yield of crops. Therefore, there is a need to study water-carbon coupling modeling at various scales to increase water use efficiency (WUE). Using a summer maize field in North China as an example, the variations in leaf and canopy photosynthesis and transpiration (or evapotranspiration) were analyzed. The synthetic model of photosynthesis-transpiration based on stom...

An accurate estimation of crop evapotranspiration (ET c) is very useful for appropriate water management; hence, an accurate and user-friendly model is needed to support related irrigation decisions. In this view, a study was developed aimed at estimating the ET c of winter wheat–summer maize crop sequence in the North China through eddy covariance measurements, to calibrate and validate the SIMDualKc model, to estimate the basal crop coefficients (K cb) for both crops and to partition ET c into...

The dual crop coefficient (Kc) approach to estimate crop evapotranspiration (ETc) separately considers soil evaporation (E) and plant transpiration (T) by computing a soil evaporation coefficient (Ke) and a basal crop coefficient (Kcb), respectively, with Kc=Ke+Kcb. This approach may be more precise than the single Kc approach particularly when the crops incompletely cover the ground. The SIMDualKc model, which is adopted in this study, is an irrigation scheduling simulation model that uses a da...
