We read with interest the article on ‘Low incidence of vertebral fractures in early spondyloarthritis: 5-year prospective data of the DESIR cohort’ by Julie Sahuguet et al .1 The results are exciting regarding the significantly lower prevalence of vertebral fracture (VF) among patients with ‘early SpA’ and the crucial aspect of recognising vertebral defects as confounding factors. However, certain aspects of this study require further clarifications. First, the external validity of the data rema...

To assess the efficacy and safety of pirfenidone in systemic sclerosis-related interstitial lung disease (SSc-ILD). This was a double-blind, randomised, placebo-controlled, pilot study. Subjects with SSc-ILD and forced vital capacity (FVC) between 50 and 80% of the predicted (%pred) value were randomised in 1:1 ratio to receive either pirfenidone (2400 mg/day) or placebo for 6 months. Primary outcome was the proportion of subjects with either stabilisation or improvement in FVC at 6 months. Seco...

The efficacy and safety of mycophenolate mofetil (MMF) has been studied in patients with systemic sclerosis (SSc)-related interstitial lung disease (ILD) with moderate–severe impairment. There is no study on its use in patients with mildly impaired lung function. The objective of this study is to determine the efficacy and safety of MMF for treating mild SSc-ILD (forced vital capacity (FVC) ≥ 70% predicted). This was a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled pilot trial. The subjects with S...

Background Recent studies have documented high variation in epidemiologic transition levels among Indian states with noncommunicable disease epidemic rising swiftly. However, the estimates suffer from non-availability of reliable data for NCDs from sub populations. In order to fill the knowledge gap, the distribution and determinants of NCD risk factors were studied along with awareness, treatment and control of NCDs among the adult population in Haryana, India.

Background: The relative frequencies of co-morbidities like depression, anxiety, fatigue and sleep disturbance in RA, SLE and GPA are not fully elucidated. Objectives: To estimate and correlate the prevalence of depression, anxiety, fatigue and sleep disturbances in patients with RA, SLE and GPA by using time honored scales and PROMIS-HAQ 1 . Methods: This was a cross sectional study of 183 patients (RA – 57, SLE – 64, GPA – 62). Diagnosis and assessment of depression, insomnia, anxiety and fati...
