Abstract Membrane distillation (MD) is an alternative membrane technology that offers the capacity to treat highly saline water including industrial wastewater, seawater, brine water from other processes, and oil-gas field produced water. However, conventional hydrophobic membranes suffer fast wetting and severe fouling especially when low surface tension chemicals exist in saline water, which compromises the performance of MD. Recent advances in material science and nanomaterials research have ...

Abstract Electrodialysis is a commonly used desalination method. In this study, we investigate its hybridization with its reverse process, where reverse electrodialysis (RED) harvests the salinity gradient power to provide the driving force for electrodialysis. In particular, the desalination performance (rejection and recovery) and their tradeoff relationship are simulated for the first time for an energy self-sufficient RED-ED desalination stack (REDD). The simulation results show that these t...

This study reports a novel carboxylated nanodiamond (CND)-enhanced self-cleaning antifouling catalytic membrane. Four poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF)-based membranes (PVDF, P-CND, P-TiO2, and P-CND/TiO2) were fabricated by non-solvent-induced phase separation. The membrane pore size, porosity, hydrophilicity, and permeability were in the same order of: PVDF < P-CND < P-TiO2 < P-CND/TiO2, suggesting that CND and TiO2 had a synergetic effect in improving these parameters. The two membranes contai...

Abstract Particles suspended within feed flow or added into membrane-filtration systems may behave as foulant or fouling mitigation agent. The fine boundary between these two roles warrant attention to promote the beneficial role of particles and avoid their undermining impact. The particle back-transport phenomenon is first elucidated, then the four possible enhancing roles of particles in membrane-filtration systems are discussed, namely, mechanical scouring, as adsorbents of organic foulants,...

Abstract Progresses on development of forward osmosis (FO) membrane should be accompanied with development of acceptable FO modules. Most flat-sheet FO membranes are assembled into the modified spiral wound module by introduction of an internal baffle which results in a U-shape flow path that allows flow uneven-distribution. This study assesses the flow uneven-distribution and its impact on a U-shape flow path and compares it with a straight flow path (I-shape), like the one in the plate-and-fra...

Abstract The large volumes of oily wastewater generated by various industries, such as oil and gas, food and beverage, and metal processing, need to be de-oiled prior to being discharged into the environment. Compared to conventional technologies such as dissolved air flotation (DAF), coagulation or solvent extraction, membrane filtration can treat oily wastewater of a much broader compositional range and still ensure high oil removals. In the present review, various aspects related to the pract...

Abstract The presence of transparent exopolymer particles (TEP) in water bodies has been related to several adverse impacts in various water treatment processes. In recent years, there have been an increasing number of publications relating to TEP. Unfortunately, this increased interest in TEP measurement has not been accompanied by significant improvement in the analysis method or TEP monitoring. Currently, the most common method to analyze and quantify TEP only allows offline, and often offsit...

Abstract Crossflow microfiltration and ultrafiltration are widely used in membrane bioreactors for wastewater treatment and applications in the food, biotechnology and process industries. Membrane fouling is an endemic problem in these operations that can be mitigated by backwashing and intermittent relaxation of the pressure or flux. Intermittent relaxation offers advantages relative to backwashing since it does not alter the membrane morphology or damage susceptible membranes, provides a more ...
