ABSTRACTFollow-on equity fundraising for young ventures is a key issue for venture capital (VC) performance and entrepreneurial success. VC managers’ antecedents and fund characteristics might play a role here, through a signaling perspective, in securing additional financing for their portfolio ventures. However, the entrepreneurial finance literature has not yet investigated the importance of the lead VC managers’ profiles for syndication in subsequent VC financing rounds. In this mixed-method...

We review ontological, epistemological, and methodological concerns in writing up research, distilled from selected inductive studies published in leading academic journals. From this analysis of practices emerges the following categorization, (a) rhetoric, (b) craftsmanship, (c) authenticity, (d) reflexivity, and (e) imagination, which informs the writing up of appealing and convincing qualitative research. We give examples and propose actionable writing heuristics. We offer reflections and rec...

We posit that qualitative inquiry is essential to management science but is insufficiently capitalized on and that, if aggregated through meta-studies, such research could yield rich insight on emergent properties and enable the development of higher-order knowledge and theory. We introduce a pragmatic approach along four ontological perspectives to conducting meta-studies from qualitative inquiries. We identify principal epistemological, ethical and methodological concerns and dilemmas that occ...

We examine the venture capital (VC) industry and its French exception, both in terms of upstream (sourcing) and downstream (company and fund performance) value creation. French funds are evidenced to underperform in comparison to their Anglo-Saxon counterparts and most European neighbors. We conceptualize VC agency as a process of construction of expertise through deliberate practice. We identify five principal dimensions of expertise construction: i) institutional roles and phenomena iii) fund ...

Again and again scholars evoke a seriously dysfunctional relationship between management research and education on the one hand, and the practice of management on the other. We share this viewpoint, and with this appraisal intend to (re-) open the debate. We expose some views on the intellectual and sociological roots of the malaise, advocating a philosophical stance rooted in pragmatism and particularly in John Dewey’s pragmatic stance. We outline a number of essentially workable, albeit for de...

This is a qualitative empirical study on global leaders’ use of popular management concepts. Why do top executives read such concepts, rather than richly available validated theory, as they cope with the conflicting demands of the current business context? Does – and if yes how does – such literature help them to innovate and to keep a competitive advantage? Narrative interviews of 20 leaders of large global conglomerates over a period of 12 years are coded, conceptualized and categorized. Abstr...

The merits of qualitative, inductive research in contributing to the understanding of management and organizational realities are increasingly vaunted, but such studies are still essentially review...

We outline a novel qualitative research method dubbed, for now, pragmatic emergence method. We explore and argue this proposition based on our research work on top executive learning and coping, but also from the stance a practitioner, a pedagogue, and simply a reflective human being, because all these selves are inseparable. We introduce the construct of emergence and advocate that it is a pervasive and under-acknowledged quality in all inductive research aimed at generating new theory.
