The lack of adequate data on the oral health status among the Egyptians is a challenging barrier for the assessment and improvement of oral health needs. The aim of this study was to collect data on oral health status among a sample of Egyptian rural population and to assess the possible role of the socio-demographic, socio-economic, and behavioral risk factors on the status of the present dentition (the pattern of tooth loss and edentulism). Data was collected from 530 patients with age ranged ...

Abstract Ellagitannins have a marked antioxidant effect and can prevent liver injury induced by free radicals. An undescribed ellagitannin named styphelioidin was isolated from Melaleuca styphelioides Sm. The structure of styphelioidin was elucidated by using various spectroscopic methods. The hepatoprotective activity of styphelioidin (25, 50, and 100 μM) was tested using the CCl4-challenged HepG2 cell model by measuring alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) levels...

Abstract The golden thistle, Scolymus hispanicus L. (Asteraceae), is a prickly perennial herb that is widely grown in Mediterranean and in Southeastern Europe. The aim of current study was to isolate and identify the constituents of S. hispanicus L. chloroform fraction, and assess their anti-inflammatory activity in-vitro. Chemical investigation led to isolation of one new guaianolide sesquiterpene; namely iso-japonicolactone (4), three tritepenes namely lupeol acetate (1), lupeol (2), and olean...

Abstract Available antiulcer medications reveal partial efficacy and numerous adverse reactions. Tetramethylpyrazine (TMP) was known for its potential antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and angiogenic properties. The aim of current study was to investigate the potential gastroprotective effect of TMP against indomethacin-induced gastric ulcer in rats with possible underlying mechanisms. TMP was tested at 3 doses (15, 30 & 60 mg/kg/d po) three days before indomethacin challenge (25 mg/kg ip). Gastric...

Abstract Background Bisoprolol is an effective β1-adrenergic blocker, an inter-individual genetic variability was recorded in its response. This study aimed at investigating the association of CYP2D6*2A (rs1080985) and CYP2D6*10 (rs1065852) single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) with Bisoprolol response in cardiac patients attending King Abdulaziz University Hospital, Jeddah, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Patients and methods In the study, 107 patients were enrolled. Five mL of venous blood was collect...

Alcohol administration has been widely correlated with gastric injuries involving gastric ulcers. Grape seed extract (GSE) is a rich source of phenolics and flavonoids with marked antioxidant and anti-inflammatory characteristics that might give it a potential impact on the gastric ulcer. Polyphenolics are naturally occurring antioxidants that protect our bodies from ROS damage and their intake has probable health advantages involving protection from many ailments. Thus, this study intended to i...

Abstract Aim Schizophrenia is a chronic, disabling and one of the major neurological illnesses affecting nearly 1% of the global population. Currently available antipsychotic medications possess limited effects. The current research aimed at investigating potential therapeutic add-on benefit to enhance the effects of clozapine anti-schizophrenic. Main methods To induce schizophrenia, ketamine was administered at a dose of 25 mg/kg i.p. for 14 consecutive days. Naringin was administered to Wistar...

The fruits of Opuntia ficus-indica (L.) Mill. (OFI), a member of the family Cactaceae, are cultivated in Saudi Arabia and considered as a functional food with anti-inflammatory activity. The aim of current study was to chemically characterise OFI growing in Saudi Arabia by GC–MS and evaluate its anti-inflammatory activity in rat models via carrageenan-induced paw oedema and croton oil-induced ear oedema at two doses 100 and 200 mg/kg. Palmitic acid (10.68%), linoleic acid (5.9%), oleic acid (8.1...

Chemobrain refers to a common sequela experienced by a substantial subset of cancer patients exposed to chemotherapeutic treatment, a phenomenon that dramatically deteriorates the survivors’ quality of life and prevents them from restoring their pre-cancer life. This review is intended to address the current knowledge regarding the mechanisms underlying the pathophysiology of the chemobrain phenomenon, with special focus on the antineoplastic agent ‘’doxorubicin’’, which has been shown to be imp...
