Abstract This work describes a novel in situ fermentation process to intercalate bioactive surfactin molecules into layered double hydroxides (LDH). The direct intercalation of surfactin into the LDH could only yield partially-intercalated surfactin/LDH hybrids, which were a mixture of LDH with the intercalated spacings of 10.8 A and the pristine LDH at 8.3 A. In this study, four additives—montmorillonite, activated carbon, and the layered double hydroxides (LDHs), Mg2Fe–LDH and Mg2Al–LDH—were tested for their ability to promote surfactin production in a Bacillus subtilis ATCC 21332 culture. Cordyceps militaris exo-polysaccharides (EPS) have been reported to possess many benefits, such as anti-tumor, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activities. In this study, the precursor effect for iturin A production was quantitatively analyzed. A strain identified as Bacillus amyloliquefaciens BPD1 (Ba-BPD1) was selected due to its ability to produce iturin A.
