We used doubly labeled water and electronic timers to measure field metabolic rates (FMRs) and activity budgets of Common Murres (Uriu anlge) breeding in eastern Newfoundland. Mean FMR (1789 ± 265 kJ.day-I) was about 50% higher than predictions for seabirds. The high FMR may be related to thermal costs in a cold ocean environment and to high locomotion costs associated with a wing structure that is a compromise between flying and diving needs. Field and activity—specific metabolic rates of 20 free—living Northern Gannets (Sula bassanus; mean mass = 3.21 kg) rearing chicks at Funk Island, Newfoundland, were measured using doubly labeled water and activity timers. Field metabolism (FMR) averaged 4865 kJ/d or 6.6 x basal metabolism (BMR). Northern gannets, Sula bassanus, and possibly other seabird species nesting on Funk Island off northeastern Newfoundland preyed on postsmolt Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar. Salmon comprised less than 1% of 2928 regurgitated food samples collected from gannets at the colony. Ten smolt tags were recovered in and near the gannetry during August or September in 1984 through 1986. We used electronic activity recorders to measure flight time, dive time, and time on the water of breeding Common Murres (Uria aalge). During both incubation and chick rearing, about 90% of birds' time away from the colony was spent on the water or diving and 10% was spent flying. Fish population densities were measured at various instances from 2 large colonies of double-crested cormorants Phalacrocorax auritus to test the hypothesis that seabirds deplete prey close to their colonies. Fish densities were significantly lower in bays used by cormorants for feeding than in those outside their foraging range.
