The Precambrian era is associated with the origin of life on primitive Earth. It was, in fact, in that era that ribonucleic acid (RNA) was first acquired. From this evolved the genomic deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) that later generated the biomolecules that formed the first cell. In this way, with the ongoing changes in environmental factors, the first cells evolved to give rise to higher multicellular organisms, i.e., plants and animals. Radiolarians and diatoms are organisms that have been conse...

Abstract Background In the last three decades the species of Candida have been of great interest due to the high mortality rates that they cause in immunocompromised and hospitalized patients. These species are opportunistic pathogens and they have inhabited other environments long before colonizing human cells. Among these environments we find wastewater from mines, and water from aquifers and soils that contain high concentrations of precious metals as well as toxic and base metals. Aims The a...
In this work we report the effect of introducing pyruvic acid (PA) in the growing process of silica-carbonate biomorphs. Gas-diffusion and single-phase methods were performed, and different concentrations of pyruvic acid were tested. Moreover, influence of UV radiation on the morphogenesis of the samples was analyzed. Since PA decomposes in CO2 and other compounds under UV radiation, here we demonstrate that PA decomposition enables a source of carbonate ions to induce the precipitation of silic...

The use of microorganisms for in vivo synthesis of quantum dots (QDs) not only makes it possible to obtain useful materials with tunable characteristics under mild conditions, but can also ensure the removal of toxic heavy metals from polluted water systems. Because real water treatment schemes contain more than one pollutant, this work attempted to determine the responses of Candida to exposure to two cations with known different survival pathways: Pb(II) and Cd(II). Five Candida species, C. al...

In this work, we report the synthesis of a monoclinic hydroxyapatite [Ca10(PO4)6(OH)2] (hereafter called HA) prepared by the sol-gel method assisted by ultrasound radiation at room temperature. The characterization of both the monoclinic and the hexagonal phases were performed by powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) and using synchrotron radiation (SR). The measurement of the piezoelectricity was performed by piezoresponse force microscopy (PFM). The synthesis produced a mixture of monoclinic and hex...

Abstract In recent years, C. albicans and C. glabrata have been identified as the main cause of candidemia and invasive candidiasis in hospitalized and immunocompromised patients. In order to colonize the human host, these fungi express several virulence factors such as the response to oxidative stress and the formation of biofilms. In the expression of these virulence factors, the cell wall of C. albicans and C. glabrata is of fundamental importance. As the outermost structure of the yeast, the...

In this contribution we want to show how the intramineral proteins affect the crystal morphology of calcite crystals grown in vitro. Intramineral proteins from emu eggshells and two crocodile species were isolated, purified by ultrafast liquid chromatography, and characterized by biochemical and biophysical methods. We saw that the crystal habit of calcite was modified when intramineral proteins were present at certain concentration. Therefore, all crystal species were individually characterized...

In this article, we use novel and non-conventional devices, based on polyolefins that help to increase the thermal protection of protein crystals in their crystallization conditions for crystallographic applications. The present contribution deals with the application of some ad hoc devices designed for transporting protein crystals to the synchrotron facilities. These new devices help transporting proteins without cryo-cooling them, therefore replacing the conventional dry Dewars. We crystalliz...
