We examine how geoconservation and geotourism can help the local development of an economically underdeveloped karst area. First, we briefly present the geoheritage of Aggtelek National Park, which largely overlaps the area of the Aggtelek Karst. The area is built up predominantly of Triassic limestones and dolomites. It is a typical temperate zone, medium mountain karst area with doline-dotted karst plateaus and tectonic-fluvial valleys. Besides caves, the past history of iron mining also enric...

The Mt. Ojos del Salado (6893 m a.s.l.) is situated within the Andean Arid Diagonal, on the Chilean-Argentinean border. Due to the extremely arid climate, surface ice is not widespread on the Mt. Ojos del Salado and at similar high altitude massifs in the region, though ice-bearing permafrost might be present. However, the thermal regime of the ground is relatively unknown in the region, especially outside of rock glaciers at high elevations north of 30°S. To study ground thermal regimes, in-sit...

ABSTRACTHyperspectral satellite data is an efficient tool in vegetation mapping; however, previous studies indicate that classifying heterogeneous forests might be difficult. In this study, we propose a mapping method for a heterogeneous forest using the data of the Earth Observing-1 (EO-1) Hyperion supplemented by field survey. We introduced a band reduction method to raise classification accuracy of the Support Vector Machine classification algorithm and compared the results to the one reduced...

The study of human-environment relationships in mountain areas is important for both theoretical and practical reasons, as many mountain areas suffer similar problems, such as depopulation, unemployment and natural hazards. Medium mountains constitute a special case within mountains, because they are more populated but less attractive as tourist destinations than high mountains. In this context, the Apuseni Mts (Romania) are considered as a case study. In this paper, we apply GIS-based, quantita...

Human-environment relations have some special characteristics on karst terrains, and karstlands are usually less densely inhabited areas principally due to hydrologic, topographic and pedologic reasons. However, the natural factors of karst terrains and socio-economic development are rarely discussed together, and the relationships are usually expressed in qualitative terms. Therefore the aim of this paper is to explore the direct and indirect quantitative impact of natural settings on socio-eco...

In this article we analyse the human-environment relationships in geographical research from the end of the 19th to the beginning of the 21st century. We highlight paradigms, which aff ected our way of thinking about man-environment relations. Discussing scientifi c approaches and paradigms in geography the leading scientists who had infl uential thoughts and helped the shaping of a paradigm will also be mentioned. The research on human-environment relations has appeared in geography from time to t...

The Apuseni Mountains is a very interesting unit among the mountains of Romania and South-Eastern Europe. Due to the variety of the geological structure its relief is diversified. Although the karstic rocks occupy only 6% of the whole region, and another 9% are occupied by partially karstifying rocks, we consider that the karst has an important role in these mountains. Based on touristic maps we created a database with almost all natural touristic attractions. We ranked these sights according to...

Egy OTKA kutatas kereteben immar harom eve foglalkozunk a termeszeti kornyezet adottsagainak a tarsadalom aktivitasara tett hatasaival, illetve ezek mertekevel.
