BACKGROUND&AIMS: There are sparse data on the epidemiology of fatty liver in the elderly Asian population. We evaluated for predictors of fatty liver and high risk of advanced fibrosis in a community-based elderly population. METHODS: A total of 1091 participants (mean age was 74.6+/-6.3 years) were enrolled from 2017 to 2018. Subjects with age younger than 65 years, alcoholism, history of hepatitis B and hepatitis C were excluded. Fatty liver was diagnosed with abdominal ultrasound by using ult...

AIM: To evaluate the effect of mean HbA1c on the correlation between HbA1c variability and all-cause mortality, and the risks associated with different levels of HbA1c and glycaemic control status in patients with type 2 diabetes. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients with type 2 diabetes and at least three HbA1c measurements within 12-24 months were included. HbA1c variability score, coefficient of variation (CV) and standard deviation (SD) were used to evaluate variability. A variability score of 50...

Summary Background & aims Loss of muscle and bone mass is prevalent in the stroke population. Few studies have investigated the difference between having a stroke and hemiplegia and their influence on segmental body composition. This study aimed to evaluate the changes of body composition in the extremities and trunk of stroke patients in comparison with those of the healthy controls. Methods Stroke patients with an onset of longer than 6 months and healthy participants matched by age and gender...

This study sought to determine whether chronic hepatitis B or C would modify the association between insulin analogues and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) risks. We conducted a nationwide nested case-control study for HCC cases and matched controls from 2003 to 2013 among newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes patients on any antidiabetic agents in Taiwan before and after exclusion of chronic viral hepatitis, respectively. A total of 5832 and 1237 HCC cases were identified before and after exclusion of ...

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is an emerging epidemic worldwide and is regarded as a hepatic manifestation of metabolic syndrome (MetS). Only a few studies have discussed the biological features associated with quantitative assessment of ultrasound for characterizing NAFLD. Our aim was to delineate relevant metabolic characteristics using a new quantitative tool, the ultrasound quantitative diagnostic index (QDI). A total of 394 ultrasound data were analyzed to extract texture-feature...

Abstract Background Vibrio vulnificus, Aeromonas hydrophila, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), group A Streptococcus, and group B Streptococcus are commonly detected causative agents of necrotizing fasciitis (NF) in Chia-Yi Chang Gung Memorial Hospital. The aim of this study was to develop and evaluate a multiplex PCR method for the simultaneous detection of five of the most important human pathogens involved in NF by using a novel combination of species-specific genes. Methods...
