Drawing on career construction theory and leader-member exchange (LMX) theory, this research examined the mediating role of LMX in explaining the effect of employee career adaptability on career prospects, as well as the moderating role of agreeableness in this process. Two field studies were conducted among Chinese employees and their supervisors to test this model. In study 1, time-lagged multi-source data were collected from 252 employees and 69 supervisors. The results showed that supervisor...

The COVID-19 pandemic has become a significant global crisis that requires individuals, organizations and nations to take necessary steps to cope. To develop a comprehensive and systematic understanding of the impact of COVID-19 pandemic on individuals' career development and possible coping strategies, we adopt a cultural psychological perspective to analyze: (1) how internalized cultural orientations (e.g., values, thinking styles, regulatory focus) may shape individual responses and coping st...

The United Nation’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) offer an extensive framework for coordinating and shaping government policies, and for engaging the public with sustainability. Public understanding of the SDGs and sustainability can influence this engagement, as people are more likely to accept and share information consistent with their own understanding. We identify public understandings of SDGs through mental maps of how people relate the SDGs to environmental, social and economic ...

Abstract Although the negative relationship between career adaptability and turnover intention has been established in previous research, understanding of the mechanisms and boundary conditions is still incomplete. In this study we attempt to address this gap by developing a dual-path moderated mediation model based on career construction theory, social exchange theory and trait activation theory. Specifically, we propose two mediators - career satisfaction and perceived organizational support (...

Cultural events have been found to make one’s group identity temporarily more salient. How long such an elevated sense of identity can endure remains, however, an empirical question. Building upon the model of affective adaptation, we propose that the elevated sense of group identity may decrease quickly during a culturally important event, and this process is mediated by the decline of positive emotions during the event. Consistent with this prediction, a diary study (Study 1) with a Chinese sa...

Abstract The concept of boundaryless careers characterizes emerging career patterns that are less dependent on traditional organizational career management. Based on an evidence-based review of literature on the relationship between career boundarylessness and career success published from 1994 to 2018, we found that boundaryless careers have mixed effects on the various indictors of career success, and these effects depend on the operationalization of career boundarylessness, the motives (volun...

Abstract Based on the job characteristics model and career construction theory, this study examined the role of internship quality in the employment success of Chinese university students. A four-wave survey study was conducted in a sample of university graduates (N = 207) and the results showed that after the effects of baseline career adaptability (Time 1) were controlled, internship quality (Time 2) and proactive personality (Time 2) positively were both associated with subsequent career adap...

This study examined how Chinese parents’ career values and adaptability predict their career-specific parenting behaviors and their children’s career adaptability. We conducted a survey study with Chinese university students and their parents (N = 264), and found support for the mediating roles of career-specific parenting behaviors in linking parents’ vocational characteristics and children’s career adaptability. Specifically, parental support is positively related to parents’ intrinsic fulfill...
