Abstract The adult body size is species-specific and controlled by complex interactions between hormones and the IIS/TOR pathway. To analyze the role of target of rapamycin (TOR) in the growth and development of the insect, expression levels of TOR were silenced in the model and pest insect red flour beetle, Tribolium castaneum . Injection of dsRNA into the last larval instar decreased pupal mass and size, while the amount of food intake by the larvae was not affected. These results place TcTOR ...

Summary Body size in holometabolous insects is determined by the size at which the juvenile larva undergoes metamorphosis to the pupal stage. To undergo larva-pupa transition, larva must reach a critical developmental checkpoint, the threshold size (TS); however, the molecular mechanisms through which the TS cues this transition remain to be fully characterized. Here, we use the flour beetle Tribolium castaneum to characterize the molecular mechanisms underlying entry into metamorphosis. We foun...

The oxidation of the Breslow intermediate resulting from the addition of an N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) to benzaldehyde triggers a fast deprotonation, followed by a second electron transfer, directly affording the corresponding acylium at E > −0.8 V (versus Fc/Fc+). Similarly, the oxidation of the cinnamaldehyde analogue occurs at an even higher potential and is not a reversible electrochemical process. As a whole, and contrary to previous beliefs, it is demonstrated that Breslow intermediates,...

Stable dicationic dioxolium salts featuring an ancillary vinamidinium pattern were synthesized and characterized. Although highly reactive, they were found otherwise easy to handle under inert atmosphere. This offered the opportunity to generate and study the fate of unknown 1,3-dioxolyl radicals. Depending on substituents, reduction led to the formation of dimers of either dioxolyl or cyclohexadienyl radicals, stemming from a process that is related to the Surzur–Tanner rearrangement. The cyclo...

Holometaboly is a key evolutionary innovation that has facilitated the spectacular radiation of insects. Despite the undeniable advantage of complete metamorphosis, the female of some holometabolous species have lost the typical holometabolous development through neoteny. In Xenos vesparum Rossi (Strepsiptera: Stylopidae), a derived species of the holometabolous endoparasitic order Strepsiptera, neotenic females reach sexual maturity without the pupal and the imaginal stages, thus retaining thei...

Abstract Background This study aimed to analyse the incidence, timing and treatment of surgical site infections (SSI) within 30 days after colonic surgery. Methods Quality improvement project through retrospective analysis of consecutive colonic surgeries between February 2012 and October 2017 at Lausanne University Hospital (CHUV). SSI were prospectively assessed by an independent National surveillance program ( www.swissnoso.ch ) up to 30 postoperative days. Treatment strategies including drai...

Abstract Introduction Preoperative malnutrition is a demonstrated risk factor for adverse outcomes after esophagectomy. Optimizing patients’ nutritional and immunological status may have beneficial impact. Objective The aim of the present study was to evaluate the impact of preoperative oral immunonutrition (IN) on postoperative outcomes after oncological esophagectomy. Methods Retrospective single-centre study of consecutive patients operated for esophageal cancer between 2011-2015. IN was intr...

Abstract Background Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) guidelines advocate early postoperative mobilisation to counteract catabolic changes due to immobilisation and maintain muscle strength. The present study aimed to assess compliance to postoperative mobilisation according to ERAS recommendations. Materials and methods This is a retrospective cohort study on consecutive colorectal surgical procedures treated within an established ERAS protocol within a single center between May 2011 and M...
