BACKGROUND: The duration of sleep might be a risk factor for chronic kidney disease (CKD). We investigated the relationship between sleep duration and incident CKD. METHODS: In this retrospective cohort study of 7,752 men and 6,722 women, we divided the subjects into 4 groups according to sleep duration, i.e., those whose reported regular sleep duration was 6 but /=8 h sleep (the ">/=8 h group"). CKD was defined as the presence of proteinuria and/or an estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR)...

Abstract Background & Aims The association between skipping breakfast and glycemic parameters, including glycemic variability, in patients with type 2 diabetes is unknown. Therefore, we investigated the impact of skipping breakfast on glycemic parameters, including glycemic variability, in patients with type 2 diabetes. Methods In this cross-sectional study, we assessed lifestyle factors, including skipping breakfast using a questionnaire method. We calculated the average, standard deviation (SD...

The importance of microcirculation for adverse outcomes in the early phase of critical illnesses has been reported. Microcirculatory function is assessed using the perfusion index (PI), which represents the level of circulation through peripheral tissues. We investigated the correlation between PI and cardiovascular death to explore whether it can serve as a predictor of cardiovascular death. This retrospective study included 2171 patients admitted to Matsushita Memorial Hospital in Osaka, Japan...

Objective Reduction of muscle mass and strength is an important treatment target for patients with type 2 diabetes. Recent studies have reported that high-intensity resistance training improves physical function; however, all patients found it difficult to perform high-intensity resistance training. Radio calisthenics, considered as therapeutic exercises to promote health in Japan, are simple exercises that can be performed regardless of age and help move the muscles and joints of the whole body...

Abstract Aim Limited joint mobility (LJM) of the hand is one of the important complications of diabetes. Diabetes is a risk factor for hospitalisation with infection. This study investigated the relationship between LJM of the hand and the incidence of hospitalisation with infection in type 2 diabetic patients. Materials and Methods LJM of hand was defined as the ‘prayer sign’ or ‘table test’. The association between LJM of the hand and incident hospitalisations was evaluated using Cox regressio...

Abstract Objectives Diabetes mellitus is a major public health issue globally. Cross-sectional studies have demonstrated that skeletal muscle quality and quantity by computed tomography (CT) is related to glucose metabolism. However, no longitudinal study elucidated the association between muscle quality determined by CT and glucose metabolism. Thus, we evaluated the association between muscle quality and glucose metabolism. Methods In this retrospective study, we evaluated data from 621 middle-...

The risk of colon or breast cancer in metabolically healthy obese (MHO) were lower than that in metabolically abnormal obese (MAO). We hypothesized that the risk of incident gastric cancer in MHO is lower than that in MAO. This historical cohort study included 19,685 Japanese individuals who received health-checkup programs from 2003 to 2016. Each subject was classified as metabolically healthy (MH) (no metabolic abnormalities) or metabolically abnormal (MA) (one or more metabolic abnormalities)...

We investigated the association between creatinine to body weight (Cre/BW) ratio and incident diabetes. In this cohort study, 9659 men and 7417 women were follow up mean (SD) 5.6 (3.5) years and 5.4 (3.4) years, respectively. For men, tertile 1 (T1; n = 3176), Cre/BW < 0.01275; tertile 2 (T2; n = 3258), 0.01275 ≤ Cre/BW < 0.0148; and tertile 3 (T3; n = 3225), Cre/BW ≥ 0.0148; and for women, T1 (n = 2437), Cre/BMI < 0.0118; T2 (n = 2516), 0.0118 ≤ Cre/BMI < 0.014; and T3 (n = 2477), Cre/BMI ≥ 0.0...
