Summary This cohort study conducted in Japan showed that severe age-related kyphosis was visually detected. The visual assessment of kyphosis was associated with declines in ADL, suggesting that we can easily identify people at high risk to develop future ADL reduction in the community setting.

Treatment options for chronic spinal cord injury (SCI) remain limited due to unfavourable changes in the microenvironment. Gene therapy can overcome these barriers through continuous delivery of therapeutic gene products to the target tissue. In particular, adeno-associated virus (AAV) vectors are potential candidates for use in chronic SCI, considering their safety and stable gene expression in vivo. Given that different AAV serotypes display different cellular tropisms, it is extremely importa...

Calcium and nutrients are transferred from mothers to fetuses or infants during pregnancy or lactation, respectively, promoting metabolic changes in the mother, many uncharacterized. To evaluate these changes, we undertook two parallel studies. In one we analyzed fourteen clinical cases of vertebral fragility fractures, at or before three months after partum, in mothers who breastfed their infants. In the other, we enrolled 79 additional pregnant subjects, some who chose to breastfeed and others...

Background To predict conventional test forces (peak torque and pull-out force) and a new test force (implant stability quotient [ISQ] value of a spinal pedicle screw) from computed tomography (CT) parameters, including micro-architectural parameters, using high-resolution micro-CT and clinical multislice CT (MSCT) in human cadaveric vertebrae.

Background Obesity is an important factor affecting incidence and development of musculoskeletal degenerative changes. In addition, obese patients are considered less favorable surgical candidates for decompression surgery in degenerative lumbar spinal canal stenosis and lower limb arthroplasty. The purpose was to assess disease characteristics of lumbar spinal canal stenosis as well as lower limb osteoarthritis, and to investigate surgical times based on body mass index (BMI) in lumbar decompre...

Tenosynovial giant cell tumors (TSGCTs) generally occur in the limb joints, and only rarely in the spine. This case report describes a patient with TSGCT of the spine at C1–C2, which was treated surgically and diagnosed as TSGCT. A 32-year-old woman with a 4-month history of neck pain and numbness in both upper extremities was referred to our department. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed a neoplastic lesion extending from the left epidural space to the erector spinae muscles at the C1–C2...

Pseudomyogenic hemangioendothelioma (PMHE) is a rare endothelial neoplasm that involves the bones in only 14% of all cases. The optimal treatment strategy has not been established. We herein report a case of primary PMHE in which denosumab treatment showed activity in both imaging studies and the clinical outcome. A 20-year-old woman presented with worsening pain in her left ankle. Imaging studies showed multifocal fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG)-avid [maximum standardized uptake value (SUVmax), 15.95]...

Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) is the most common pediatric spinal deformity. Several AIS susceptibility loci have been identified; however, they could explain only a small proportion of AIS heritability. To identify additional AIS susceptibility loci, we conduct a meta-analysis of the three genome-wide association studies consisting of 79,211 Japanese individuals. We identify 20 loci significantly associated with AIS, including 14 previously not reported loci. These loci explain 4.6% of ...

Due to their rarity and diversity, sarcomas are difficult to diagnose. Consequently, there is an urgent demand for a novel diagnostic test for these cancers. In this study, we investigated serum miRNA profiles from 1002 patients with bone and soft tissue tumors representing more than 43 histological subtypes, including sarcomas, intermediate tumors, and benign tumors, to determine whether serum miRNA profiles could be used to specifically detect sarcomas. Circulating serum miRNA profiles in sarc...
