Abstract This study characterized genetic diversity in the Argentine garlic germplasm bank by analysis of 10 SSR loci in 73 garlic accessions. A total of 43 alleles and polymorphic information content (PIC) value of 0.38, along with various accessions that could not be differentiated with these SSR markers, suggest a relatively high level of genetic redundancy in this garlic collection. Nonetheless, cluster analysis using different methodologies (UPGMA, STRUCTURE, and PCoA) consistently and clea...

Carrots are typically classified as annual or biennial, depending on their vernalization requirement for flowering, a trait that is genetically-conditioned. Wild carrots are predominantly annual, requiring less hours of cold temperatures for flower induction, whereas most cultivated carrots are biennial (i.e., they have higher cold temperature requirements). After vernalization, if followed by long days, floral stem elongation and flowering take place. Previous studies using F2 and BC1 families ...

ABSTRACT The honey bee is the most frequently used species in pollination services for diverse crops. In onion crops ( Allium cepa ), however, bees avoid visiting certain varieties, being attracted differently to male sterile (MS) and fertile (OP) lines. These differences might be based on the phenolic profiles of the cultivars9 nectars. To understand the relationship between nectar composition and pollinator attraction to different onion lines, we tested sensory and cognitive abilities and pala...

The defining characteristic of the botanical family of Apiaceae (former Umbelliferae) is the inflorescence. The flowers aggregate in terminal umbels that may be commonly compound, often umbelliform cymes. Likewise, flowers of the carrot are clustered in flat, dense umbels, partially with zygomorphic petals at the edges. Carrot producers and consumers mainly consider the vegetative phase, namely the storage root as a vegetable. Nevertheless, the reproductive phase is an important topic for geneti...

: Onion (Allium cepa L.) is one of the main vegetable crops. Pollinators are required for onion seed production, being honeybees the most used. Around the world, two types of onion varieties are grown: open pollinated (OP) and hybrids. Hybrids offer numerous advantages to growers, but usually have lower seed yields than OP cultivars, which in many cases compromise the success of new hybrids. As pollination is critical for seed set, understanding the role of floral rewards and attractants to poll...
