Chicken astrovirus (CAstV) is one of many viruses related to enteric diseases in poultry that are associated with Runting-Stunting Syndrome (RSS), which affects young chickens. CAstV was also recently associated with an unusual condition in chicks called "white chicks." Some hatcheries in certain states of Brazil have reported several incubation problems, mortality, and the presence of chicks with white plumages over the past several months. These chicks were termed locally as "white chicks." Th...

Abstract1. The presence of parvovirus in chickens with enteric disease was investigated in commercial flocks in Brazil.2. The intestinal contents of chickens exhibiting clinical signs of diarrhoea, weight loss or mortality were examined, and chicken parvovirus (chPV) was identified using a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay. The samples were sequenced and inoculated into specific-pathogen-free (SPF) embryonated eggs to isolate the virus.3. Necropsies showed that the embryos were dwarfish, hae...

Abstract1. The possibility that infectious bronchitis virus (IBV) variants isolated from broilers with enteric and respiratory problems have a different tropism and pathological outcome from those IBV strains causing classical respiratory disease was investigated.2. IBV variants were isolated from broiler flocks with enteric and respiratory problems in two regions of Brazil. The USP-10 isolate, of enteric origin, was inoculated via the oral oroculonasal routes into IBV-antibody-free broilers and...

Poultry enteric diseases are an important economic problem involving many etiologic agents, including enteric viruses. Several viral agents have been detected around the world in enteric contents isolated from commercial chicken and turkeys flocks that initially appear healthy but exhibit enteric signs, such as diarrhoea, decreased food consumption, loss of body weight, and mortality. Chicken astrovirus, avian nephritis virus, chicken parvovirus, infectious bronchitis virus, fowl adenovirus grou...

In the present study, 27 primers were screened under different cycles by random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) method. Mathematical models were used for analysis of the genetic relationships among strains, including vaccinal, reference strains and nine field isolates previously characterized as Mycoplasma gallisepticum (MG)F by RAPD and pulsed field gel electrophoresis (PFGE). The PFGE was considered as laborious, expensive and time-consuming than RAPD method. These methods improved the typeab...

Eighty-eight strains of Escherichia coli were isolated from broiler with chronic respiratory disease (CRD) in commercial poultry production farms in Sao Paulo State. E coli isolates were submitted to slide agglutination test with specific antiserum monospecific to O antigen. It was demonstrated that thirteen (14.77%), belonged to serotype O2, three (3.4%) to O21, six (6.81%) to O36, four (4.54%) to O45, three (3.4%) to O50, twenty one (23.86%) to O78, three (3.4%) to O88, four (4.54%) to O119, t...
