Abstract Derived Cetane Numbers (DCNs) of engine lubricating oil/multicomponent 95 Research Octane Number (RON) gasoline surrogate mixtures were measured in an Ignition Quality Tester (IQT). Measurements separately assess the effects of calcium- and magnesium-based detergent additive fraction, oil viscosity, oil degradation, and base oil classification on mixture ignition propensity at conditions with relevance to low speed pre-ignition (LSPI) in gasoline engines. Testing of 0–25% (by mass) oil ...

Abstract The low-temperature oxidation of hydrocarbon fuels has received increasing attention as advanced engines seek to operate in less conventional combustion regimes. Large n -alkanes are a notable component of many real transportation fuels and possess strong reactivity in this important low-temperature range. These n -alkanes have been studied extensively in various canonical kinetic experiments but seldom in systems with strong coupling between low-temperature chemistry, transport, and he...

Abstract Due to their natural coupling of low-temperature chemistry and transport, cool flames are a valuable platform for drawing fundamental understandings of complicated phenomena relevant to real engines. In this study, self-sustaining partially premixed cool flames of dimethyl ether are investigated in detail through the use of an ozone-assisted counterflow burner. A double cool flame with distinct diffusion flame and premixed flames sides is visibly observed at increased fuel loading and e...

Abstract The dynamics of near-limit cool diffusion flames are investigated experimentally and numerically by studying transient flame evolution and instability. In order to observe the effects of chemistry-transport coupling on ignition and instability in a cool diffusion flame, diffusion flames of n-heptane and pure oxygen are sensitized by ozone in a counterflow burner. First, it is found from experimental observations that the immediate addition of ozone to the oxidizer side of a frozen flow ...

Abstract The combined effects of transport and fuel reactivity on the critical flame initiation radius for n-alkanes and aromatics are investigated experimentally and numerically using outwardly propagating spherical flames at atmospheric pressure. The effects of transport on the critical flame initiation radius are examined by comparing n-alkanes with different sizes (n-heptane vs. n-decane) but similar molecular structure and reactivity. The effect of fuel reactivity and chemistry on the flame...

Abstract The changes in flame structure and burning velocity of premixed n -heptane/air flames associated with ignition chemistry have been investigated in a reactor-assisted turbulent slot (RATS) burner. Two distinct turbulent flame regimes are identified by varying the flow residence time and reactor temperature. A chemically frozen (CF) regime is observed at a reactor temperature of 450 K and a low-temperature ignition (LTI) regime is identified at 650 K. At a reactor temperature of 450 K, th...

Abstract Self-sustaining premixed cool flames are successfully stabilized in a dimethyl ether/oxygen counterflow burner through ozone addition, creating a new platform for the quantitative measurement of cool flame extinction limits, ignition limits, and structure as well as the validation of low-temperature chemical kinetic models. First, results show that stable premixed cool flames can exist over a broad region of equivalence ratios and strain rates, which allows for the ignition and extincti...
