A number of reaction variables in the solution synthesis of lead (IV) polyesters were examined. Both electronic nature of the diacid and lead-containing material is important, with an increase in yield resulting as the nucleophilicity of the salt increases. Diffusion is also an important factor. Reaction is favored by an increase in the concentration of reactants.

Modification of poly(ethylene imine) with tin-containing reactants was effected utilizing the interfacial technique. Products from dihalo reactants are crosslinked while products from monohalo reactants are linear and soluble containing from about 30 to 90% inclusion of the tin-moiety. Oligomeric Group IVA ferrocene Polyesters were synthesized utilizing the interfacial condensation technique. Yield decreases with increasing complexity of the aliphatic substituent; it decreases in the order of I > Br > Cl, and it decreases in the order of Sn > Ge > Si. Thus, initial attack by the nucleophile, steric requirements, and metal—halide bond breakage appear important: Where M = Si, Ge, or Sn.

Hafnium polyethers were synthesized utilizing both the interfacial and aqueous solution techniques: Thermal properteis of the polyethers were studied by DSC and TGA analysis. Polyphosphonylureas were prepared from the condensation of phenylphosphonic diisocynate with secondary and primary diamines employing the interfacial technique. The thermal properties of the products were studied by differential scanning calorimetry and thermal gravimetric analysis. Reaction variables of the interfacial condensation of Cp2TiCl2 with diamidoximes is presented. At 1:1 Cp2TiCl2: diamidoxime ratios and less the product is found to contain predominately units of form I. It is tentatively concluded that the disubstituted product, form II, is formed at Cp2TiCl2:diamidoxime ratios > 1. The synthesis of ferrocene containing polyesters is reported along with particular reaction and substituent dependencies. Synthesis is rapid being completed within 30 seconds.
